Up The Stairway To The Sex Industry: Webcam Modeling

Where there's a hole, there's a way. [HIATUS]
I have no more reviews to write, yet I still have the motivation to write. I decided that for my very first article (among a series) that I would write about my vast experience, not just with dancing, but with the adult industry as a whole.

I’ve never had a regular 9 - 5 job, never worked for an Employer or had the position of anything besides self-employed or an independent contractor. I’ve pretty much always used myself as entertainment - both in general gigs and adult gigs. There are jobs that I’ve done in the past where I was definitely naive, taken advantage of, and rolled with some punches either because I either really wanted the money or was afraid of getting the other person upset. I’ve taken long breaks from said work after getting fed up or finding something better, but then I would eventually return smarter, more efficient, and more assertive with my limitations regardless as to if it affected my money or not.

I get questions all the time as to whether I’ve done anything else besides dancing.
Guys: Enjoy this personal history lesson of living and learning through sex work.
Girls: If you’ve ever considered any of this work, I’d advise you to learn from my experiences and use them to prepare yourself if and when you start.
Both: Feel free to ask me questions after reading, but I won’t answer anything too incriminating nor will I share any personal links.

This is what I’ll be writing about where the order will be when I tried each line of work. I’ll put down my “then” experiences when I was a beginner, then I’ll put down my “now” experiences - obviously referring to how I handle the work now that I’m seasoned enough to know better.

If this segment doesn’t interest you, just find another in my articles to read as an alternative.
This will be a lengthy and mildly explicit article. I hope this entertains or at least intrigues you;

THEN:

[ Late 2011]
This is a typical story of how I was a starving full-time art school student. It was very hard to get a job because I didn’t have any job experience by the time I was 18. I updated my resume regularly, but when I was a self-doubting angsty barely legal adult I wasn’t sure how to properly show either on my resume, copy letter, or in job interviews all of my redeeming qualities and skills. I got a lot of opportunities to work retail, sales, work from home gigs, but nothing was cutting it.

The highlight of this work was that I was still a virgin at the time. Because I had next to no personal experience with sex (other than what they taught me in sex ed, which was to do/talk about/think about absolutely nothing outside of wedlock, which is also what my super religious grandparents taught me growing up.), pornography that I watched in secret fascinated me. I eventually discovered these ‘camming girls’ on Redtube Live and Streamate and was a frequent viewer of amateur girls on Tumblr (before they banned nudity) and realized they could earn money from the comfort of their home by doing the bare minimum - literally!

I figured… I could do that. I’ve never had sex, had no toys, but I’ve played with myself plenty of times out of the sheer curiosity and I wasn’t embarrassed about being undressed or nude. It wasn’t like anyone watching would recognize me because I was an outcast in grade school and didn’t have a normal job. (Fun fact. Someone from my high school did recognize me. LOL) That was my mindset anyway. I wasn’t convinced that I was going to make $10,000 my first week like a lot of camming ads shouted out. Hell, I didn’t even think I was going to make a quarter of that, but I was willing to register and see what happened.

I signed up on Streamate, sent out whatever I needed for verification and tax purposes, and the very next night I was clear to stream whenever I wanted. My setup was incredibly tricky because I stayed in a student housing complex with 3 other roommates in my apartment. The one I shared a room with was only around maybe once a week, but I had to learn the other two’s schedule with work and school so I knew when I could privately cam. None of them ever found out that I did it. I used a crappy HP laptop with the most basic webcam built-in (probably a 3MP at best quality) with nothing but a basic desk lamp from Wayfair as my lighting. It wasn’t the worst quality I’ve ever seen, but I definitely stood out like a rotten potato compared to the other camgirls.

My first stream was… actually not that bad considering all that I offered (which wasn’t that much, I don’t think). I cammed for about 2 or 3 hours, and the shortest that I had to wait for a private chat request was within a minute of talking. There was a time where participation was dragging and it was a good 45 minutes until people started chatting again and buyers started digging in. All I was wearing was a basic $12 babydoll piece from Target (which I don’t even remember how I got the money to get in the first place.), the only “toy” I had were those palm-sized shoulder and back vibrators that you could find at CVS or Walgreens. Most of the private sessions lasted around 5 minutes or so, but the best one I had that night was about 30 minutes long with a very patient guy that first wanted a slow 360 of me naked, very close up shots of my pussy, and then he wanted me to cum with aforementioned vibrator - which wasn’t very strong at all, (but nothing is strong now compared to the magic wand I currently have.) so it took quite some time and I was actually a little self-conscious because I wasn’t quite sure if it was normal for girls to take this long to cum. Like I said earlier, all I had to base it on was whatever porn I watched beforehand and that was a terrible comparison, but this guy stayed till the end and was pretty much the bulk of my earnings that night. For my first night ever, with a terrible setup, and not a whole lot of options as to what I could do in the paid chat, I did fairly well. I was able to buy myself a load of groceries that I could only hope that my roommates wouldn’t inhale.
After this evening and being satisfied with my earnings after 2 or 3 hours of camming, I decided to try and log in every night that time would allow me. Unfortunately after that, each session I logged in got slower and slower. There were a few nights where I would stay on for 2 - 4 hours and only make $30. Eventually, this got tiresome, but I no longer had the freedom to cam as much as I could, because after a month was when the old semester was ending and a new one was beginning. All the girls had different schedules and the roommate that I was rooming with moved out and got replaced by a different one with hermit tendencies. It was very rare I had the room to myself from that point on.

I tried camming again a little while after I finished school, but this time I was moved back in with my grandparents. In this case, I had to wait till at least midnight to log in, because they were up by 6AM and didn’t fall asleep till 11pm most nights. I had an Acer in my possession this time instead of my HP, so it had a slightly better processor and webcam in it, and the lighting in my room was great, but absolutely messy because my grandma used my bedroom as a storage unit while I was away at school. If I had the camera turned anywhere besides my bed, you’d be disgusted. Camming this way turned out to be fail anyhow because I didn’t have the freedom to talk vocally to customers and was restricted to typing - which made communication frustrating. I tried three other websites besides Streamate since moving back home from school (where I’m freshly 20 years old now and no longer a virgin.);

LiveJasmin - This site has an ultra upscale/posh atmosphere it likes to keep and has very strict guidelines for models as far as uploading quality photos and videos. They didn’t care about the quality of my camera while streaming, but I had photosets rejected so many times by them I eventually gave up trying to put a gallery up. The photo sets were primarily for the Fanclub option that was given to models so that customers could watch or see content at a discount based on a subscription, and while I was initially for the idea, I got burned out by the constant rejection and decided it probably wasn’t for me. Then I had a bad experience with one of the customers who was sending me fake/imitation tips for my attention during the stream. I didn’t realize they were fake and assumed this guy was literally tipping me 300 - 500 coins at a time for nothing. Another user was trying to warn me that the guy was full of shit, but I found it hard to believe LJ even had that option for users. Apparently, they did, and to this day, I still don’t understand why. This guy talked me into doing a 10 minute private Skype show with him for a generous 3000 monopoly tip, and despite the earlier warning I received, I was still puzzled as to why the coins weren’t showing up in my account balance after I finished the stream and call. I messaged the Help staff about it where they explained (for whatever reason) customers had an option to throw a fake tip at the model (I guess to encourage others to tip for real??) but I was encouraged to ban him if he abused the option. I was livid - at him and myself. I did not return to that site afterward.

Chaturbate - Again, due to the setup in my bedroom back at my grandparents’ home, it was still hard to make any decent money. There were also a good number of users on there that came into my room and chatted, but there was a shocking number of them that were pretty rude - many saying I had no tits/ass and how I ‘had the body of a boy’. I was much smaller in size at this time than I am now (I was a AA cup, a size 2 in jeans, and less than 110 pounds at the time.) and wasn’t quite developed yet in some assets or developed in the bank account to purchase other assets that refused to develop. I, of course, wasn’t popular enough to have a decent moderation team that automatically blocked out the asshats, so I kind of took the insults as self-deprecating jokes and laughed at the remarks. For real. I didn’t bother kicking the guys out of my chat room during this session and they eventually left on their own when they got bored. I wasn’t really feeling the fact that private chat wasn’t a popular feature here and most of the money girls earned was driven by tips since you could pretty much be as sexual as you wanted in the open chat. That and I misunderstood the conversion of said tips to an actual dollar amount, so while guys were sending me tokens throughout the stream I was on the assumption that I was doing very well, and then I checked my balanced after and realized I’ve made nothing to brag about. So naturally, I called quits on this site too.

MyFreeCams - I’ll say right now. This camsite is not friendly to new girls. The only girls you usually see featured on the front page are the ones that have been camming on there for a very long time and understand the system and tools of the site. Customers were coming into my room asking why I didn’t have this widget set up or this goal set however high or where my mods were or I wanted to do an ‘hour’ of training with them every time I logged in to become a decent working cam model. I didn’t stay on for longer than 30 minutes. This honestly felt more humiliating than the troll guys on Chaturbate.

So… even with my past setups and personal downfalls, each website had something about it that I didn’t and don’t like by default. I probably had the best experience with Streammate, and that was me working as one of the most basic girls the site had to offer. I took a long break from camming after about a month of exploring my options with the other sites and focused on other forms of entertainment as well as caretaking my grandparents instead.

WHAT ABOUT NOW?:

[Early 2019]

This was the most recent time I attempted camming again. I made a new Streamate account after dealing with the Winter slowdown at the clubs. Obviously, my sexuality has grown exponentially since the very first time I attempted camming, so toy options and what I liked doing were expressed much better along with limitations.
My set up is godly for a lot of things besides camming. Overpowering the former measly HP laptop now is my ASUS ROG gaming laptop (16gb of RAM, 4TB combined storage, Intel i-7 processor, GTX 1060 6GB graphics card), my Logitech c920 webcam, a Blue Yeti microphone, and two wonderful flash light stands for excellent lighting (primarily used to practice self-shots in photos).
I’ve watched a lot of top tier cam girls do their work over the years and sort of picked up from observing their techniques - including pitching in a bit of money to watch multiple GOLD shows to learn from that as well.
All of this considered you’d think… I’d probably make a decent cam girl now that I’ve got all the ropes.

However, I just don’t have the patience anymore after I started dancing.
When I went back to cam again last year, I did it for a week tops before I went “fuck this.”

Online entertainment is just not the same vibe to me as any kind of sex work face to face, it requires a different skill set compared to IRL entertainment, and it’s a much bigger commitment for slower money unless you’ve got a very big and reliable fanbase. Even if you’ve done this for years, there will be nights where you have to be very patient with the lack of activity in your room or pull teeth just to get guys to say hi or converse with you, let alone spend money.

[Now during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have people asking me if I’m going to cam again and I’m sitting real heavy on the fence about it. If I do start again, I’d only do it until I start working normally at the club again. It’s not something I can see myself doing full time.]

    What fees/cuts do the cam-sites take?

    @Pepsi. There should never be a fee to directly sign up as a camgirl - unless the girl is applying through an in-person studio that's partnered through a camsite where a room, makeup, and equipment is provided to her, but even my knowledge of that is kinda iffy because I've never tried to work at a studio.

    As far as cuts... on the top of my head, I remember the payout range to models being between 60% - 80%, and even lower if she works through a studio. But most if not all webcam sites offer models a referral bonus where they can keep 100% of the earnings received through any customers they can refer to join the site.
