I regret not going to the Skyway Lounge. Sure, it’s in a shrouded part of downtown Minneapolis, but it had a … well, I don’t want to say it’s been a local landmark, but it’s been there a long, long time, a reliable refuge for diehard pathetic losers. I would have been one of them, but for most of its life I was working downtown and would’ve torpedoed my life and reputation (what little I have of either at least) had I been caught sneaking in.
But I’ve been employed elsewhere in the Twin Cities for a while, so I wasn’t scared of that possibility for a while. And a couple weeks ago I got a call from Amber, one of my ATF’s when she worked at BJ’s, that she was working at what used to be the Skyway. It’s now called Lure Show Club – makes sense for Minnesota; we love to fish – and she wanted me to come and help her out as she started working there.
I will say one thing: Even not knowing how the Skyway Lounge looked, they sure fixed up the place. The club inside belies its outer façade. You have to walk down the shady side of Hennepin Avenue, the one that doesn’t have the theaters and bars, go past the possibly gay Barfly nightclub (which used to be the Skyway theater and still uses its marquee) and duck into the double doors, which have been refurbished to be a color other than the drab gray that’s the shade of choice of the establishments surrounding it.
