Thanks @General - we haven't had a thread with such high-quality content since @Flagooner left.
I was reading a good article about Liz Warren the other day. She's from Oklahoma and her father had a heart attack while Liz was a kid. Her mother took a minimum-wage job to support the family. So Liz was from a dirt-poor family and still managed to get a law professorship in Texas. She was originally a pro-business Republican and an expert on bankruptcy law -- but she gradually changed her mind and became pro-consumer after being in the weeds and being immersed in actual bankruptcy cases. As it turns out, many of those in bankruptcy were *not* deadbeats and came from all walks of life.
She eventually became a Harvard Law professor based on her publication records and *not* because of the "Pocahontas" affirmative-action nonsense.
Compare her life story to Trump's: Trump was born into wealth, he's lazy, unintelligent, a narcissist, and a pathological lair.
I think Liz Warren and Hillary were decent looking women in their prime. There's not a single good-looking woman in their 70's -- but of course you know that @General. And you're probably a grotesque, wrinkly-old-mess yourself, General. Thanks for the great thread.

The case against Backpage was bogus^^ I'm stating all the facts as clearly as I can and not trying to "pick a fight." Just disagree with the premise that politicians are pandering for votes. There was almost certainly some trafficking going on Backpage. But taking down the site probably did more harm than good.

The case against Backpage was bogusSeveral different issues:
(1) Are the owners of Backpage being prosecuted unfairly with trumped-up charges of aiding trafficking? Possibly, but I don't have much sympathy for those being prosecuted.
(2) Does some fraction of Backpage's business involve trafficking? Almost certainly -- but I have no idea how big the fraction is. Either does anyone else on this thread.
(3) Did taking Backpage down make it harder to fight trafficking? Almost certainly. The problem migrates to hundreds of other sites making it harder for law enforcement.
(4) Did taking down Backpage put consenting adults in more danger? Almost certainly. Forces independent girls back on the streets and under the control of pimps.
Painting the whole issue as politicians pandering for votes ignores all the complexity of a difficult topic. "Reason.com" is not as bad as some other publications -- but it's a libertarian rag and definitely has an agenda.

So you've done extensive research and you're absolutely sure that sex trafficking has never occurred on Backpage? Or are you saying accepting some trafficking is a necessary and acceptable because the government should stay out? Or, just what are you saying?

The case against Backpage was bogusComplicated issue. I have no doubt that some fraction of Backpage's business involved sex trafficking of minors. However, in a practical sense, it also shut down the market for consenting adults. Some of these girls (of legal age) who conducting business without pimps are now pushed into the hands of pimps without a place like Backpage to advertise. So shutting down Backpage may exacerbate the problem overall.
A lot of the business from Backpage ended up on SA, and a lot of pimps and johns use SA now. It's obvious from some of the posts here (like @3131's post about getting robbed in his hotel room).

Hustlers Trailer @Jack: "They had no social conscience--or any other kind of conscience. "
_____________
In a contest for "lack of social conscience" b/w strippers and the Wall Street mortgage securitization chain (circa 2008) I would choose Wall Street, any day. Looks like a good movie.
The real-life story behind the movie comes from this article in NY Magazine:
https://www.thecut.com/2015/12/robin-hood-strippers-scores-c-v-r.html
some excerpts:
"Here’s a modern Robin Hood story for you: a few strippers who stole from (mostly) rich, (usually) disgusting, (in their minds) pathetic men and gave to, well, themselves."
"The men were mostly assholes. Even when they didn’t start out that way, they’d get drunk and say things like, “Did your father abuse you? Is that why you do this?,” which was unnerving even when it wasn’t true. The majority were married, though that didn’t stop them from asking for things like blow jobs or sex or to be penetrated with a Champagne bottle, a request that they were shocked came from a clean-cut family man."
“We had a guy who was — is — at Guggenheim Partners. He spent 300 grand in one week. He came in three times, 100 grand every time he walked in the room. Everyone made $10,000 every time he came in.”

-----------------
I didn't say that. That's a strawman.
I'm quoting the first line of your thread:
"Shareholder value is no longer the main focus of some of America’s top business leaders."
The corporate tax windfall was used to buy back company stock. The only purpose of the stock buyback was to increase shareholder value. This was not pennies and dimes; it amounted to 100s of billions of dollars this year alone. That money came at the expense of taxpayers because it increased the deficit. CEOs benefited vastly more than the average shareholder.
How can you not possibly see the hypocrisy? To repeat: watch what CEOs do and ignore what they say. The tax cut was unpopular and people who read know the score. The CEO message is basically propaganda to avoid a progressive backlash.

____
That "chunk" is about 1/3 of Americans. The stock buybacks help CEOs the most because they are compensated with company stock. Obviously I own stocks like everyone else on TUSCL.
Think how patently absurd this article is: the only major piece of legislation under Trump was the corporate tax cut which was predicted to raise the debt and deficit significantly($2T over 10 yrs). Companies used the tax cut to buy back their own stock instead letting the money "trickle down" into business investment and wages. The unsustainable deficit will be used to cut entitlements if Trump is re-elected.
The article is bullshit. Watch what CEOs actually do; ignore what they have to say.

Ditto. We just had a massive corporate tax cut that went primarily into stock buybacks (not business investment or rising wages) which raises CEO compensation. Most likely these CEOs fear a progressive backlash in 2020.

Widest age gap - OTC^^^ TUSCL has always been a place where middle-aged guys brag about their prostitutes. I take part in the bragging too but try to bring myself down to reality now and then. There’s no chance I would be dating hot 21-yr-olds at my age. By the time you get to 3-decades of age difference, it’s very uncommon for vanilla dating to take place without an exchange of money. Uncommon but not impossible.

Drinking While DrivingIn Colorado it's also illegal to have open containers of alcohol in the car -- except in the trunk.
I hardly drink. Worst ticket in my lifetime was a 4-point ticket for gazing at Google Maps while driving. Cop said that I was texting, but not so.
