Just heard MGM Properties in Vegas is laying off valet, concierge, doormen and bellmen at most of their properties. Luxor buffet closing as well.

More layoffs coming(?) for Vegas as many US tourist destinations are getting pounded due to lack of international visitors. I also read somewhere a lot of Canadians visit Vegas which many are now boycotting.

I’ve always thought Vegas has been flooded with visitors (around late 2021-early 2022) since the masks came off during COVID but I also now could see visitor numbers trending downwards well before Trump took office.

My last trip was just last month and that was the first time since COVID that the crowds and vibe seemed finally back to normal, with the exception of everything costing at least double!

Sigh. What an necessary and avoidable loss. I feel like if Vegas survived the pandemic, it can survive the trade wars, but who knows.

I'm glad I don't have to read the comments that are sure to follow which will maga-splain how alienating and isolating us from our best trade partners and allies is actually a good thing.

Las Vegas is losing a large amount of business from people who travel from other countries who no longer want to visit our country because of Trump. Billions will be lost in tourism revenue as once again anything Trump touches turns to shit.

This started last November with the Rio layoffs
MGM s CEO said theyll raise prices/fees and focus on automation and layoffs. The non union people and mid level management are the first shakeups.
They think that people coming in for aports and events will pay anything and thats what they want to bank on.
Tourist cities are a reflection of the general economy more than anything. Americans are broke. Cant afforf to travel as price gouging eats up more and more of any potential disposable income

Normal folks got fed up with being hustled, this is the wheel turning, easy money's getting tight.
This was inevitable, watch what happens next.

Its not that simplistic. They wanted to make vegas a sports city. Thats basically the new theme. They think people coming for sports and one off events will pay anything. Then everyone else got on the band wagon. Its becoming an unlivable city. Unless people have union jobs theyre fucked over more than tourists

“With the exception of everything costing at least double”. I think that’s the only explanation you need to know about why tourism is down. The lack of discretionary income is hitting most everyone and the only ones who can afford it are the haves, as there are too many have nots left around to spend anymore.

You know they are opening a lot of casinos everywhere. You have to wonder how many gamblers are even out there in America. Is that market getting too flooded? It's a big thing in NYC a few locations in development (that look real nice btw) are competing for a license from the state. No doubt that could really hurt Atlantic city though locally, I mean how many new casinos are we gonna be able to make work in America?

Vegas ran me out 50 years ago when they ran the mafia out and started charging for everything.

This was in the news over here recently. I think the continued rise in resort fees and paying for parking is grinding gears for many, if you’ll pardon the pun. Paying to park is taking the piss. Fortunately I’m staying at the Virgin Hotel, formerly Hard Rock. As I have booked through Virgin Holidays I don’t pay resort fees.

Also the baby boomers are the largest and richest generation ever. Similar baby boom generations in the rest of the advanced western world. If they are going to start dying off or not traveling or spending as much in retirement, we're all gonna feel that. We're really are done growing as a country though. (And btw opening the door to the third world to flood your own country is not "growth" it's committing societal suicide. Not the answer)

Vegas lost sight of who they were. Cheap rooms, gambling, alcohol. Not $300 steaks, corporations and expensive rooms. This was coming way before the pandemic. Believe it or not liberal retards; we've had recessions before, stop pissing down your own skinny, feelbe legs.

Agree with comments on resort fees and charging for parking. Standing in line in the lobby for an hour trying to check in to my room. Vegas service used to make me feel a little important. Now they never miss a chance to piss on my bald head, then charge me for it.

Hookers always charge tourists a lot more. The general consensus seems to be to fuck tourists over as much as they can.

The problem with Vegas is its a budget destination trying to brand itself a s a luxury locale. Not a great move when were one foot in a recession

Occam's razor: Las Vegas tourism is in steep decline because it sucks to be a tourist in Vegas.

I have been to Vegas twice in the past ten months. It Is awful - the Strip and Fremont are not half as fun nor as exciting as they were pre-pandemic. Traffic is amongst the worst I have driven in. Street hustlers have taken over every spare inch of sidewalk. The stink of legal skunk weed is everywhere. The quality of the food and entertainment has cratered. You get nickeled and dimed for everything inside and outside of casinos. It is simply no longer fun, and there are much more affordable and enjoyable alternatives.

^^^ everything said above is exactly true.

Let's see, last trip, a bottle of water and a slice of cheese pizza $28. My dinner for 2 at Scarpetta was almost $800

Fremont used to be fun, now I'm halfway scared to even go down there.

On a positive not, I did not see any homeless people sleeping inside the casinos this go around.

My biggest complaint, getting knocked over by the weed smell every time I exit a casino on to the strip.

As far as Vegas goes, people have less discretionary spending for vacations and strip clubs, as well as cruises. Hey, at least the price of eggs is going down that Chuck Schumer lost sleep over. And, he's still lost in the wilderness.

Middle Class families are feeling the squeeze from the last 4 years of inflation and income that hasn't been keeping up with inflation. Hard to blame Trump as the economy really hasn't changed much and inflation is running ~2.7->3%.

Sure, the Stock Market is thrashing around. We haven't had a true correction since July 2023 to October, when the S&P 500 dropped 10.3% from its peak. No one had their panties in a bunch over it. People are freaked over the planned tax cuts and what they'll be like, and when the big tariffs we subside. We are seeing a lot of Letters of Intent from counties which is a good sign. Stuff like this is glacial in movement; Trump is at ramming speed or how well run businesses get things done. Yeah, bitch away - yada yada yada. When it gets better later this year and going forward, you sure won't give any credit to Trump or the fraud, waste and corruption that DOGE is uncovering. And for all the PL Chicken Littles here on SS, Medicare, Medicaid - as long as you legally qualified you'll fine.

Interest rates are relatively high and rose fast compared to 2008-2022. House prices are starting to dip a tad as people with 3% mortgages don't want to sell, and those who want to buy for the first time are priced out, and those who want to sell haven't been in their home long enough to appreciate enough and the new house they will buy is the same or more than they have now. It'll sort out, it has several time the past 40 years.

People are freaking out over this tariff stuff designed to align our trade way more fairly and heavily curb America as their personal, unlimited ATM. People expect instant results and have become accustomed to "free" stuff and lots of it.

We are heading back to a more typical economy for the US. Gov't spending needs to be adjusted to 18% ->20% of GDP (peace time spending percentage) compared to the current 25%->26% with $2T Deficit spending. Tariffs won't help much as they will be temporary until our trading "friends" realize America is not going to support their Social Welfare Economies (cradle-to-grave Socialism.)

Biden Cash is GONE! Student Loans need to be paid back. Mortgage rates are up compared to 3 years ago - Fed started raising under Biden to temper inflation that was ignited by federal spending; a vicious circle the Fed was at odds with federal spending. Credit card and car defaults are on the rise.

Fremont street is almost as expensive as the strip and overpriced for what it is. The owner of the Circa pretty much bought up everything affordable and shut it down. Lame club bs like Discopussy charge a $30 cover and $15 beers.
Food quality is down everywhere in Vegas. Places aren't consistent.
I think if you're downtown. Carson Kitchen, Albo Pizza and Le Thai are your best bet. Boston Pizza if youre wasted. Evel Pie. Theres a taco cart by a mechanic shop right before Chicas Bonitas thats pretty good. You see a lot of the dancers there.

Vegas also isnt nearly as safe as it used to be. And nightlife is dead. I remember when you could club til 7 or 8. Go to after parties right after. Or eat. Youd see people from the clubs. Those days are gone

I used to go to Vegas every year for March Madness. A room this year cost $900/night. That’s $4K pus airfare before I even land. Heck the company I work for actually owns a casino there and I can’t get a rate. Instead I gambled on my phone.

Vegas isn't fun anymore and that's the biggest issue. Being billed every time I so much as glance at something is annoying. I'm not a big spender, but have plenty of discretionary income, and I get pissed at all the hidden charges, upsells, etc.
The food isn't great, the pot smell is pervasive, the homeless are everywhere and the shows aren't as interesting to me as the once we're.
Vegas used to be a place to cut loose and enjoy yourself, now it's like going through a car rental agreement.

From 1970-1996 I went to Vegas twice a year. Everything was affordable for the average Joe like myself. In the late 90's gambling was opening up everywhere and instead of the hassle of flying to Vegas I drove to local casinos for a day or two several times a year.

Finally went back to Vegas with some friends in 2023 . After my 27 year hiatus I hardly recognized the place. Prices are crazy for the average American. I am sure Vegas today caters strictly to the foreign tourists and wealth Americans. Not surprised that it is showing a decline. It will probably comeback, but I am in no hurry to return. I did not enjoy the recent trip like I use to. $5 for a bottle water at the hotel snack stand was typical of the way visitors are now treated. Certainly not like the old days where cheap food/shows were the attraction and gambling paid the bills.

Favorite choice of entertainment has always evolved. Quite frankly, why would anyone go to Las Vegas right now. For the gamblers back home, you can’t watch a baseball or football game without seeing numerous ads for Fan Duel and Draft Kings.

Vegas doesnt get wealthy tourists. A lot of what you see are multiple people or families staying in one room. Buying groceries at Target. Or one meal a day at in n out. Its ghetto AF.
