Basically a white guy went around calling people the N word and eventually a guy ended up attacking him in response.

Whats very concerning IMO is the number of people who find it unbelievable how the white guy got off with no charges. There seem to be many people arguing that you can physically attack someone for using racist words.

There are also people who get surprised and can’t understand why one guy punched a civilian or even a cop, then got (legally) stabbed or shot in response to it. Despite the concerns and some rhetoric over violent immigrants, most of the people subscribing to these sorts of views are white, black and latino people who were born here.

It then begs the question, which racist or threatening insults qualify as something you can attack someone for? How far can you go in attacking someone that says a racist or threatening word to you? Can you punch them only once, beat them till they’re unconscious, kill them, or restrain them till cops arrive?

If the criteria is just language that makes someone feel fearful or threatened, that is an extremely broad category of words. Theres people who can get scared just from someone calling them any sort of verbal insult or yelling at them. Especially if the person hurling the insults is bigger or taller… or if a guy is insulting a girl.

There are people who will feel threatened or fearful just from a bigger guy approaching them, even without any words being exchanged.
