Here's mine ... "The Rover" (2014) starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. I never really thought Pattinson had acting chops until I saw this movie. It's not your standard post-apocalyptic shtick.

"10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves' brother, and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey."

"Harold and Maude" is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It was released in 1971 and didn't turn a profit until 1983. Ruth Gordon is hilarious in this movie.

I agree on Robert Pattinson. I always thought he was a tool until I saw him in Tenet which was an excellent although confusing movie BTW.

I would go with SHOT CALLER as an underrated possibly overlooked film.

Like underrated or like B movies?

A couple B movies I saw although with some big actors was street crimes (1992) with Dennis Farina. Some 90’s fighting movie. And Brooklyn State of mind (1997) with Danny Aiello. Every one in the movie is Italian. Big actors in there but really low budget flicks that I liked.

As far as underrated I’ll always go Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2 Electric Boogaloo. Fucking awesome.

Bronx Tale

Not sure if it’s considered “underrated” since it had Robert DeNiro in it.

Underrated funny movies.

Hudson Hawk (1991) Bruce Willis movie that bombed at the box office but this shit is hilarious at times. "How's my driving? call 1-800 I'm gonna fucking die!!!"

The King of Comedy (1982) It doesn't get mentioned like it is but this one of the funniest movies ever. Shit like this (And Bronx Tale for that matter) is why Robert DeNiro is considered one of the best all time actors.

Kicking and Screaming (2005) Kids soccer movie but it's still one of Will Ferrel's best.

I’m not sure if this fits - Requiem for a Dream was a pretty good movie. I enjoyed the dark and depressing nature of it.

"Requiem for a Dream" was the best movie I can only watch one time because it's so crushingly depressing.

But it is a good movie.

^ if it is possible for a movie to get people to quit drugs or not do drugs in the first place, Requiem For A Dream would be it.

Lay the Favorite, with Bruce Willis was a pretty good movie, so was The War With Grandpa, with Robert De Niro, but an older movie named Atlantic City starring Susan Sarandon and Burt Lancaster would be my choice for Best Picture in the lesser known movie category.

Trivia question. What state is the movie capital of the U.S.? If you guessed California you would be wrong. Georgia passed California in 2016 and the biggest studio in Georgia is Trilith Studios just 6 miles from my house. Guess why home values are increasing here?

“Panic in Year Zero” was an unknown (for me) black and white thriller that popped up on Turner Classic movies several years ago. I watched the first few minutes and it hooked me.

Another movie I liked but it wasn't very big was Nobody's Fool, with Paul Neuman, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith who is and has been one of my all time favorite actresses.

Here's a few others from a different genres:

"Hell or High Water" (2014)

"A divorced father and his ex-con older brother resort to a desperate scheme in order to save their family's ranch in West Texas."

Crime drama/contemporary western starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Jeff Bridges. Taylor Sheridan (who created the TV show "Yellowstone") directs.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582782/

====

"71" (2014)

"In 1971, a young and disoriented British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the deadly streets of Belfast."

Political suspense starring incredibly good (but not A-list) actors. One of the better movies about "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2614684/

====

"Bushwick" (2017)

"When a U.S. based military force invades their Brooklyn neighborhood, 20-year-old Lucy and war veteran Stupe must depend on each other to survive."

It's a Dave Bautista vehicle. The premise is slathered in crazy sauce, but it's non-stop action.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4720702/

====

"Europa Report" (2013)

"An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon."

Surprisingly good, suspenseful sci-fi with a modest budget.

You know, I have a bunch of friends who love "Boondock Saints" but for some reason it just didn't work for me. I didn't hate it but ... meh. But a lot of people disagree with me on that one.

Idiocracy 2006. Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph. An average soldier and a hooker are put in hibernation for a year as an experiment, forgotten and wake up 500 years later in a world made so moronic by commercialism he is now the smartest person on earth.

Not that I expect most on this site to agree with me but,

Scooby Doo Meets the Boo-Brothers 1987
Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School 1988
Scooby Doo and the Witch’s Ghost 1999
Samurai Jack: The Premier Movie 2001

Since these were all made for tv, I’d imagine they would be solidly “lesser known”

Not an after school special - but this discussion reminded me of “Sarah T. – Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic”

I remember watching it when I was in high school. I was in love - seriously in love - with Linda Blair.

The cast was incredible for a made for a TV movie

Larry Hagman
Verna Bloom (“No, vegetables are sensual. People are sensuous”)
Mark Hamill
William Daniels

and directed by Richard Donner (Goonies)

There is a movie with a who's who cast all early in their careers. It is more of a cult classic now. The cast included John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin, Peter Weller and character actors Robert Ito (Quincy ME), Clancy Brown, Dan Hedaya (Usual Suspects) and Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) .

The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension

Adventurer, brain surgeon, rock musician Buckaroo Banzai and his crime-fighting team, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, must stop evil alien invaders from the eighth dimension who are planning to conquer Earth.

"Hawmps" 1976. A very funny comedy about introducing camels to the US Cavalry. The setup: The new commander shows up and everyone is expressing their anticipation about "getting their new Arabian mounts." Then the go to the riverboat to get them, and the door drops......

"The Villain" 1979. Kirk Douglas, Ann Margaret, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Paul Lynde and Jack Elam to name a few. Basically, it's a Roadrunner movie with Douglas as the coyote, a horny Ann Margaret who is trying to get Arnold (Handsome Stranger, named after his father) to ravish her. A riot!

"The President's Analyst"

1967.

James Coburn in the title role. Absorbs all of the President's troubles, which makes him paranoid. The kicker is, they really are out to get him!

Honestly a lot of Werner Herzog stuff is awesome. Idk if he’s ever had major US hit movie but all his stuff is so different and his documentaries are really good. I would say he his a guy with a ton of low budget but killer films going back decades now.

His relationship is Klaus Klinski (real madman/POS but great actor) is legendary too

Buckaroo Banzai….

Wow that’s a blast from the past. I remember early in my career I was flying home from somewhere and read the review on the plane. (Perhaps in the inflight magazine ?). The review just blew me away so I went out that weekend and watched it in the theater.

I remember most of the main cast but had forgot about Clancy Brown and Jonathan Banks - two of my all time favorite character actors

Thanks for the memory

Good calls on Paul Newman’s Nobody’s Fool and Idiocracy.

To Live and Die in LA was a really dark sleeper. Great soundtrack, action, chase scene and twist at the end. Willem Dafoe and William Peterson, John Tutorro and Dean Stockwell and give great performances early in their careers. Hot women too.

Studme53 - I agree about that movie To Live and Die in LA. I remember watching it on a VHS rental many years ago. It was dark, and suspenseful. Each actor gave a good performance.
