Music Part 2: Groups/Artists That Were Always Good

shailynn
They never tell you what you need to know.
To further my previous post from the other day, what were/are some groups/artists that always released good albums? Yeah they may have had 1 bad one or one mediocre one but overall all their work kicked/kicks ass. Of course it’s going to be hard to list someone that only released 2 or 3 albums.

Off the top of my head I thought of several.

The Police - 5 studio albums all were excellent

Nirvana

Soundgarden

Gang Starr

Robert Plant

Foo Fighters

Alison Krauss

Beatles

Weeknd

Allison Krauss's version of "Going to Carolina" is classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEusOoPp…

This should be the short list - when compared to the other one.

    Audioslave
    Doors
Led Zeppelin (I know this is disputed)
    Rage Against the Machine

I would question The Doors inclusion. Remember those two meh albums the band did without Morrison after his death? I think only hardcore fans would consider them good.

@cashman gonna disagree Doors and RATM sucked the whole time

Any list of consistently good albums would need to include
    The Beatles
    The Who
    Tha Police
    Willie Nelson
    Garth Brooks
    Linda Ronstadt
    Jefferson Airplane (starship)
    Roy Orbison
    Janis Joplin

I agree about the Doors before the death of Morrison

Bands like Cream, Neutral Milk Hotel, and to some extent, Nirvana weren't around long enough to head down hill. Bands that I liked that had longevity and consistency would include:
    The National
    The Gaslight Anthem
    Foals
    The Replacements

I am going to put Tom Petty on the list as well. Sure not every album was a home run, but he had remarkable consistency and had hits over 4 different decades.

No love for that group of hairless apes that chose to dedicate their lives to LION culture? https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lions_(ba…

^BTW, Skifredo does have a point about Green Day. “American Idiot” has always reminded me of a certain homeless crab that cosplays as a fourth-rate divorce lawyer.

Lot of bands on here that were never any good to start with. There's no accounting for taste.

Ski - CCR until "Mardi Gras" I still don't understand Fogerty allowing the other two to not just write songs, but sing. Bad idea and a bad album. All the previous albums are ace though.

    Stone Temple Pilots
    CC Peniston
    The Police
    A Tribe Called Quest
    De La Soul
    4 Hero
    Inner City
    A Guy Called Gerald
    Billy Joel

I didn’t like Tom Petty and the heart breakers post 80’s personally

Dire Straits. Even the last album in 1991 was at least passable. The first five albums and the live album Alchemy between 1978-1985 were all great.

Justintolook and ime - you are correct on the Doors. I don’t consider the Doors to be the Doors without Morrison.

In my view - bands with longevity seem highly prone to turning bad.

I offer a few more for your discussion -
    Don McLean
    Buddy Holly

    Possibly Amy Winehouse...

In my view Britney Spears continues to be hot as fuck - and I enjoy her videos - as I watch them on mute!

Concur with much of the above (some of which I repeat here) along with some additions:

Eagles (though admit I haven't listened to any album post-The Long Run). Also Don Henley's solo albums (and Glen Frey's)
Tears for Fears (the 2 solo albums Roland O put out under Tears for Fears name during their interim breakup are strong IMO)
Doors (Doors without Morrison should not qualify as Doors IMO despite labeling)
    Incubus
    Marvin Gaye
Led Zeppelin (despite my comment re In Through the Out Door in the prior good bands turned bad thread - misterorange's response was spot on)
There's a case to be made for James Taylor
    Pearl Jam
Khalid, Quinn XCII, Billie Eilish, and Juice WRLD (all in the brief career category, but very good IMO)
    U2
    Audioslave (agree with Cashman)
    Chris Cornell solo projects
    Hendrix
    Mutemath

It kills me how Michael Jackson still gets radio play and basically a pass on his disgusting pedophile abuse.

Anyway - I think Elvis Costello has maintained quality, creativity and musical relevance throughout his career. His music has changed a lot since his “new wave” debut, but that was just an act anyway. Great song writer and performer.

Here are the ones I can think of, a few which have been repeated above
    Queen
    Led Zeppelin
    Beatles
    Tool
    Rammstein
Pantera - Phil Anselmo era since Cowboys from Hell. They hadn't hit their groove metal sound yet until Anselmo's 2nd album Cowboys From Hell. The previous album Power Metal still had a bit too much hair metal influence.

Black Flag - Keith Morris era was best, but can't complain about Dez or Henry
AC/DC - They did what they did well, also were great with two singers.
    Motorhead - Nuff said
    Sheer Terror -NYHC legends
    Ramones
Rancid - every record is great Rancid 2000 and Lets go wildly different but amazing albums
Cock Sparrer - possibly best Oi! Band ever, Shock Troops may be best punk album
The Business - untouchable and were around forever.
Rival Mob - every album is a banger, perfect result of NY style HC played from

    Billy Bragg
