All I know is that there are direct flights from Detroit to Frankfurt. I have used Lufthansa and liked it.
Your best bet is the check sites like Expedia or Kayak for the best fares for airports near you.
Public transportation is safe, clean and efficient in Germany. Look into taking the train from the airport to Frankfurt, and then to your final location. You can save a lot of money this way. Most Germans speak at least some English and are glad to help you with directions.
On my first trip to Frankfurt I reserved a private car to take me from the airport to Darmstadt, the town where FKK Sharks is located. It was nice to be greeted at the airport by a man holding a sign with my name. But the cost was 60 euros each way. The train would be about 11 euros each way.
If you are going to FKK Sharks, you can find nice hotels under $100 in the town of Darmstadt. I have walked from my hotel to Sharks. FKK Oase is north of Frankfurt. You can reach it by train and then by taxi. Oase also has a limo that picks up customers at a Frankfurt train station for a 5 euro fee.
This doesn't help you, but if for anyone in driving distance of Toronto, I've heard Air Canada Toronto to Frankfurt has lower prices than from anywhere in the U.S. But I haven't check into it.
By Googling "cheapest city in us to fly to frankfurt" I got:
"... The cheapest airline ticket to Frankfurt am Main from United States in the last 72 hours was $294 round-trip on the route Newark to Frankfurt am Main. The most popular route is New York to Frankfurt am Main and the cheapest ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was $1202 round-trip ..."
I was in Frankfurt last month (June 2019) for 10 days. While trains are good I decided it was a lot easier to use Uber for not much more than having to navigate the trains. I stayed at a newer nice hotel just North of the Main Train station by the huge shopping center for about $US100/night for 10 nights. I did visit the train station and took some videos - interesting to see even if don't use the trains.
Did take a the Osae limo walking to a pickup point near hotel. As I recall most of Uber rides all over the city were around $US20. Worth it for the convenience with the app and never had to wait more than maybe 5 minutes for a pickup wherever I was.
Airfare is all over the place depending on the city of origin. From Phoenix, regular coach about $1500 but used frequent flier miles. However, still cost about $500 since the landing fees tacked on or taxes in Europe are high.
Also different airlines have other add on fees. There is a very cheap service from Phoenix direct to Frankfurt but reports are terrible. As it was 19 hours to and 16 hours from with long waits for delayed connections in London Heathrow and Dallas. The British Air 747 (outgoing) was much nicer than American (return).
You can even get a graph of all upcoming fares by date from every airline. Look at all of the airline hub cities for the most non-stops and the lowest fares. Time of year matters a lot too. After Labor Day there is a big dip in fares.
You can easily find fares under $400 round trip if you don’t have more than a backpack with you.
