Just had lunch with a veteran who stormed Normandy Beach. After 75 years he is slowly beginning to talk about it the past 5 years. Not too many details but enough to make you feel grateful.
Quite opposite from today’s “look at me” generation. Back then you tried to blend in with the group for the bigger cause. I hope our youth will see that someday, and ignore the SJG and IceyLoco types.
...and after 75 years we still have idiots who join the Klan, wear swastikas, and spout hatred againt anybody who isn't them. It makes me sick to my stomach that as a society we forget the sacrifice and lessons from that generation.

I have known several vets that were on the beach on D day my dad was one and none of them talked much about it, the takeaway from what they accomplished for be is bravery is not the absence of fear but rather actions taken despite being afraid.
I have probably watched the movie "The Longest Day" more times than anyone. I have let it run over and over for entire weekends, while i was sorting papers. I know every scene and every character. Read some of the book too. Also very much like A Bridge Too Far, from a book by the same author.
With Normandy, there were simultaneous offensives in Russia and in Italy at the Monte Cassino line, so all 3 fronts, to send an unambiguous message.
And of course NBC's 4th chime was never used before and has never been used since.

A lot of things would change in this country because of sending troops to die in a wrongful war, Vietnam.

For "A Bridge Too Far" and "Patton" they were not even close.
Steven Spielberg does the best he can, and at great expense.
Longest Day was the first where everyone spoke in their real language, and it started off with French Resistance. Makes a big difference.
