The Berlin public transportation system is clean and efficient. The bus, the U-Bahn (underground trains) and the S-Bahn (surface trains) are all interconnected. You can easily transfer from one to the other. I bought a 7-day pass for 30 euros ($34). I have used the public transport to get from the airport to my hotel and to go to several sights and to go to FKK Artemis and back. Artemis is about 5 miles from my hotel in the city center. A taxi would probably be 30 euros one way.
The transit system has no gates or turnstiles or ticket reading devices. You simply walk on. You are supposed to buy a ticket or a pass, and they have inspectors who can ask to see your ticket and fine you if you don’t have one. I have not yet seen an inspector. This system works on the assumption that 99% of the riders are honest. I wonder how this system would work in New York City.

I have gotten directions from Google Maps and other apps to find out the bus or train to take. The signs are mostly in German, but most things are easy like “Bus 128” or “U6”. The underground system has given me no problems. The final destination tells you which way the train will travel. Most of the train cars have message boards announcing the next stop, and there are signs at each stop just like the NY subway.
I have had some problems with the S-Bahn surface trains. The signs in the stations have not been clear and I haven’t been sure which train to take. I have had to ask people. Thank God, most Germans speak good English.

Uber is as expensive as a taxi in Germany.
