I’m watching “From Here to Eternity,” a 1953 black and white movie staring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Donna Reed, and (last but not least) Frank Sinatra. It’s set in Schofield Army Barracks, Hawaii, in the days leading up to and including the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It’s an excellent movie and a classic, up there with “Casablanca,” although not nearly as famous. So why is this not off topic? A subplot is the interaction between the Private Prewitt character (Montgomery Clift) and “Lorene,” the dance hall girl (Donna Reed), which is really interesting. Let’s just say, if it was set in modern times, Lorene would be a stripper and Prewitt would be a RIL. Classic stuff.

Sinatra won an Oscar for that

There's still some old-fashioned trappings in the Honolulu scene around the rural clubs. Kind of like downtown LA hostess joints.

In the novel by James Jones, Lorene is a prostitute. They could not put that in a movie in 1953.
