What I don't understand is how they can force these clubs out unless they are in violation of the ordinances that were in place when they first opened their doors. Any attempt to change the terms for them now would be ex post facto and clearly unconstitutional.
Maybe that's why the DA hired a PI, to uncover or trump up evidence of illegal activity that would allow them to skirt the constitutional issues.
Cities have redevelopment power. I remember a city attempted to remove billboards. They gave a 1 year grace period... This went into litigation and the courts amended the drop dead date several further years out.
Only thing I can add to this is the city of Fort Lauderdale got a cease and desist order against Micheal Peters clubs Solid Gold And Pure Platinum years ago one shut down a few years back the other moved to Pompano in the last six months.
They tried to do a similar thing in my small town and city council voted it down, the clubs could stay. I'm not totally sure why other than they (the city) didn't want to pay to fight a law suit.
Do you think in situations like this it's solely up to the voting members of the council before it hits the courtroom?
Strip clubs should stay out of downtown areas and try not to draw attention with billboards and flashy signs and lights. They should just fly under the radar.
@ chessmaster. You're absolutely right the owners planted the seeds for this ordinance with their tacky billboard. Followed by their attitude towards those who protested against it.
Thanks ShadowCat that killed some Vegas dreams.. I like that last paragraph myself.
I hope the residents under stand the lost in tax funds and other problems. decrease in alcohol sales tax. Sales tax property tax. And all those poor women having to find other means to fund college.
Ah, Reno Men's Club was always one of my favorites.
On the plus side, brothels are legal just a few miles out of town, so maybe they'll think if they have to move anyway, why not also up the service level?
@MrBater The ordinance would still allow clubs in Reno, just in industrial areas. Tax loss? I don't know. Other businesses would occupy the vacated buildings. Plenty of other empty buildings in Reno though. Sales tax on drinks maybe, no sales tax on lap dances or VIP time. In my opinion the clubs should look at a relocation to Sparks. @Dougster, I would welcome a move to a legal brothel if they would lower their prices to strip club levels. At the moment my concern is the paranoia that may result from the undercover PI hired by the city counsel Both management and the girls may be over conscious about the cops following up on illegal activity..
