I think Undertaker was the most famous, also his name was enigmatic so was his relationship with bro Kane. Hulk Hogan was maybe daddy famous. Rock became an actor that's prolonged his media presence. The best (not most famous) was perhaps Brock Lesner...

The Rock is my favorite but it's a fact that Steve Austin made them more money than any other wrestler. I agree the new generation is pretty generic on the male side. The females though, especially Sasha Banks are better than they've ever been. That being said I don't watch it anymore either.

@mmrock- I didn't know that, thanks for the insight. It's a shame Stone Cold's career got cut short to serious injuries. It was interesting though at Wrestlemania when Rock fought Hogan, Hogan was a heel at the time, but most of that crowd was rooting for Hogan, so that made me think Hogan might have Rock beat in popularity.

Apparently Goldberg returned to WWE a few weeks ago after a 12 year absence. That doesn't get me too excited. I loved him in WCW, but his WWE career wasn't that exciting to me.
