Brexit: brilliant or non-brilliant?

4got2wipe
In a brilliant place!
I usually avoid political threads because the is typically little or no point to them. But I'll break that trend now that Brexit results are coming in. Obviously, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I will highlight one of the more pointless poll results: Oasis fans are more likely to support Brexit than Blur fans!

I like both bands, but I'm partial to Blur, so I guess I'm on the Brexit = non-brilliant side!

On a serious note, John Oliver did a great piece on "Brexit" this past Sunday. Essentially, his conclusion (if I remember correctly) was it only is right for the Brits to want to brexit, but the costs and regulations they'd have to abide by to continue doing business/trade as usual with the rest of the EU as an non-EU nation make it pointless to leave.

Leaving the EU is the same as voting for Trump: It's a populist reaction that has no basis in the rational management of the issues at hand. I hope Britain makes the same decision as I expect the American people to make.

It is hard for me to say since I don't have a dog in this fight but it does strike me that the costs of Brexit outweigh the benefits (if any). I saw that GBP actually jumped a bit in response to the stay polls.

I'd be curious to hear from londonguy or any other UK posters.

Of course, I've now opened the thread up to weirdos that want to create outrageous English characters!

I wonder if rickthelion has an English friend named rickthehedgehog! That would be brilliant!

Leaving the EU would be horribly stupid all the way around, bad for their economy, bad for travel, bad for any Brit living anywhere else in the EU, hell, bad for travel.

On the one hand, I desperately don't want a Brexit.

On the other hand, I hope the politicians will finally start listening to some of the core issues the people care about, and on which they need to consider whether they are on the wrong side -- immigration being the top one.

Banks don't want it. It would cost them millions. It would cause them to layoff thousands of employees. On the other hand I heard it could help with immigration issues and might allow The UK to devalue their currency and prime their exports in the process.
The rest of Europe probably doesn't want it because then other countries might think about leaving if things work out well for the UK.

I read it was all a scam because the UK parliament could water down any actual exit to almost have all the same things they have now as far as EU access etc. Only reason I paid attention to it was because stock markets seemed to be waiting for a verdict.

I just checked futures. I played it safe and am glad at the moment. Futures down a lot as recent results are leaning towards a leave vote. I thought the market was acting very complacent about poll results near 50 50. If the vote is to leave, I guess the real arguing can begin about what your parliament can negotiate with the EU and the stock markets can talk about this and other countries leaving for the next 2 or 3 years.

I heard predictions from years ago at least 3 countries would leave the EU.

Absolutely fantastic news to wake up to this morning !!!! I don't give a stuff about the economy or the markets, it will rebalance. Our sovereignty is FAR more important. Fucking EU, unelected and unaccountable assholes.

Now we just need to get rid of that two-faced lying piece of shit Cameron and his sidekick that lives next door to him.

Expect the Dow to crash about 700 today.

Pollsters and the betting market got this one wrong. I'm thinking about Rockstar's comment (above). Easier to blame immigrants, who don't look like you, than to deal with complicated real issues. Maybe this foreshadows a Trump win.

In the UK it's the Muslims and the Eastern Europeans that are ruining the country. Right?
Over here it's the Muslims and the Mexicans.

It looks like that wish came true!

^^ Yes, fantastic news. Can't wait to see the back of him. Asshole. That third rate bank clerk that calls himself chancellor of the exchequer is next.

Some of you guys have weird perceptions of the issues we have over here, and those of you that do need to delve deeper onto what's been going on over here. I am especially proud to be British right now. I can also tell you that millions throughout Europe are delighted at this result because it gives them encouragement that they may be able to leave soon. There's an anti-establishment mood sweeping throughout Europe.

It will hurt the Premier League making it relatively more expensive to buy players and more difficult to obtain visas. I don't like it.

Yes, I'm shallow.

What does it mean for the other UK nations?

It would be interesting to know what you are talking about, specifically, and it's true (in my case) that I don't really understand what's going on in the UK. Some of the media is calling Brexit little more than xenophobia -- which is what's sweeping the US with Trump's nomination.

Freedom from Brussels bureaucrats will result in prosperity. Control of borders will result in less crime and more national unity.

Scotland says they may have another referendum, secede, and join the EU. Only problem is that Spain would veto their entry, as it would set a precedent for Catalonia.

If Turkey joins the EU, following the UK's secession, you may as well turn off the lights in "old" Europe. Millions of muslim migrants will move to Germany and France, replacing 2,000 years of Western culture with Sharia law.

France, Italy, or the Netherlands may be next to leave. There is already talk of referendums in those countries. Cameron and Obama are looking really bad right now.

Well, I predicted Dow down 700 and it was only 611. What a relief.

Yeah, it looks like the EU is in a death-spiral.

Britain may regret leaving the EU, with the trade effects making Britain poorer. Buyers remorse will follow.

The EU isn't all that stable financially anyway. Too many countries like Greece that will be an anchor on the others.

Big(ger) government is never a good solution to anything (IMO) (Except when it comes to military and defense). So, yea, I'm happy for the Brits.

Congratulations to British independence!

Dow might be down 700 by the time Monday gets here over the two days. I believe they do controlled drops in our stock markets. I believe almost everything gets manipulated over here. The Euro is a failed experiment economically from some peoples' perspective.
