The vast majority of killings involving dogs seem to involve pitbulls. Maybe the media is just out to crucify this one bread of dog. What are there >100 different types of dogs but seems like >75% of the cases involve pitbulls.
I like animals and I like dogs - but pitbulls are extremely powerful dogs w/ jaws of death - the fact many are fine family pets does not mean they are not dangerous and many that have killed had been fine family pets - there are people that have wild animals like lions or crocs as pets but does not mean it's a good idea - e.g. that lady that got her face ripped off a few years ago by a pet chimp.
I can understand those that love them as pets; but pitbulls have proven to be way more disproportionately dangerous than most dogs - they have been banned in Miami-Dade since the 1990s I believe.
I have met many pits in my lifetime and never felt they were dangerous. Its about how you raise them. I think people just use the few bad apples and present them as if all pit bulls act like that to villianize them, sort of like minorities and Muslims.
I totally believe the Pit bull breed is maligned. I've met some VERY intelligent dogs of this breed. They do have strong drive and require an owner that will assert he or she is Alpha, the dogs need to be exercised and socialized properly.
I think most of the 'Viscous dog' laws that ban dogs from communities, confiscate and euthanize dogs or even lesser restrictions like requiring ear tattoos and registration are often passed by communities as knee jerk reactions to a problem that a little common sense would sort out.
This breed requires training and probably strong supervision when around unfamiliar dogs and children. I would stand behind mandatory obedience training for owners of these dogs (maybe) and definitely behind exclusion of this breed from a public dog park until the other dog owners in the park knew the mindset of the owner and the dog (e.g. admission of certain breeds would be on a case-by-case basis). Banning the dogs or euthanizing them? That's insane!
It does have to be realized that NOT every person should own a Pit Bull, especially people without the time and energy to train the dog properly. That's something that can be said however about almost ANY breed of dog!

Best dog I ever had was a pitbull. Loyal as could be to me and my kids.
It's not complicated math.
