Dubai is not cheap. I know a slew of guys who have gone over there for tourism. It's like Vegas you think you're getting a deal and wind up spending an arm and a leg once you're there.

Dubai was created to satisfy the really depraved ultra rich middle easterners and euro-trash...plus the locals that staff the place hate all us white folks so I'll pass. They did not build any infrastructure (sewage treatment or sewer pipes) for the hotels so they have to truck water in and sewage out all day everyday!

Dubai was created because they desperately want to be an international city and they had the money to try and make it happen. It isn't staffed by "locals" they get cheap labor from India.

My understanding is Dubai really hasn't been successful in getting Western tourism, mostly because people are still relatively frightened of it.

I sort of doubt it is "cheap" but I suspect you could do a vacation there reasonably, but that's true of most places if you plan and a little adventurous.
