Repressive, makes them look like backwoods hillbillies and will likely decrease tax revenues or at a minimum not raise very much funding. I know not to ever move to Alabama.
You raise taxes like crazy and you might deter or decrease business activity overall in the state. However in ths case, movie rentals and magazines are almost dead. they might get money from tv subscriptions. I would cancel the tv subscription if I lived there eliminating all tax revenue. Then I would be unhappy living there, move out of state, and not pay any taxes to Alabama decreasing overall tax revenue. Any business entrepreneur would think, they will put a 40% tax on anything they don't like, high risk to locate there if they don't like something, forget that. Democrats don't like it when they can't tax you like crazy or you actually make money in a business. next up could be an extra 40% tax on all businesses.
this is all the result of the left wing assault on education in the US. we now have entire generations who can’t read, write or spell. obviously they didn’t mean a “PORN” tax. they clearly meant a “PONE” tax.
this seems an appropriate time for a grammar reminder to some of the discussion board posters:

I look forward to the Alabama legislature coming up with a legal definition of pornography. I find country music pornographic. Good luck with the A.C.L.U.
Ya know, I'm beginning to think Neil Young was right on with his description of Alabama:
"....a wheel in the ditch and a wheel on the track."
@ bvino: I'm guessing they are taking the approach of the Federal Judge who said "I can't define Pornography but I know it when I see it". Its a slippery slope, once revenue falls in they will want to find other things they can censure and tax.
I love it! It is exploitative because it is about spousal abuse and child abuse. It is the flip side of born again Christianity. It deals with the same sorts of fatalism and insanity.
I think once the government is getting money out of prostitution, then it will be legal.
Reminds me of Lilburn,GA cutting alcohol license for bars a few years back. Can't have not dancing and singing while you are drinking. I think they have been trying to get places to come back ever since. So if you ever wonder why there is not a place to play poker, dance or sing in Lilburn now you know.
All they hav to do to solve their budget problems is legalize weed. Revenue will come flooding in. Just like Colorado has found.
They wouldn't have to raise anyone's taxes.
Cigarette, gambling, weed, general sales and porn taxes are just more efforts to fill state budget deficits with more money from the poor. If you short money, cut spending/get more efficient or raise income taxes on everyone.
^^^^^^ Usually when you find people worried about such things, it is their own sexual desires that they are starting to feel and are afraid of.
And I agree that taxes should be targeted at everyone, if not actually progressive. Much taxation if regressive.
But I do think that if they really have a porn tax, then it won't be too much longer until they have taxed and legal prostitution. I could see them having this, but at the same time prohibiting mini-skirts and sexually suggestive advertising. It is all just hypocrisy, and that certainly is not new.
Silkypants, thanks for cluing us all in on the San Diego Blue Line Trolley, the Mexican Pussy Express. That has answered some big logistical questions for me.
I hate alabama. Bunch of backwoods, inbred, over-religious, under-educamated (yeah, i said it), holier than thou busy body hypocrites. Go to church on sunday to repent for what you did saturday night and pray no one you know saw you doing it.
Also, you cannot order adult magazines or movies online. Well, you can order them but it's illegal to ship them here. I remember several years back after moving back here I tried to order us some stuff and there was like 5 states where it was illegal to ship adult material too. Guess what, alabama was on the list. They've been trying to shut down the adult stores in Huntsville for years. One store owner has actually been suing the state for years and even took it to the supreme court. That's the ONLY reason they're even still open. They've had to go under the guise of offering marital aids to couples who have sexual issues and need help to live a fuller married life in the privacy of their own home. The store owner that sued actually offers classes for couples in the store so they can claim it's about sexual wellness or some crap.
A 12" vibrating butt plug called a sex toy is illegal but call it a "marital aid" and it's fine because it's instills family values and helps married couples keep their church and state required union strong. Pardon me while my head explodes...... Did you know there are at least 9 or 10 swingers groups we know about just in north alabama alone? There are events every weekend somewhere.
I can think of a lot of past and present groups that control their peoples lives with such restrictions.....catholic church school system, hitler youth, islam.......... the only good thing to come out of ANY of those is the catholic school girl outfit which we can buy as a marital aid if we want and it's ok.
