  This is kind of an Indian thing, I guess. A fair complexion is considered attractive there. All of the famous female movie stars in India have very fair skin. If you go to any Indian grocery market, you will see them selling skin creams which claim to lighten one's complexion. So I guess it isn't too big a stretch to go after the same thing downstairs.
