He said he was standing outside Toppers International Showbar on North Jackson Street with one of the club's waitresses shortly after a midnight when three men approached and asked if he wanted to buy marijuana or $10 cartons of Newport cigarettes, according to police.
The victim reported that the men told him that the items were in a car downtown, but the men led him and the waitress to an area near the U.S. Post Office on West Hancock Avenue where they beat him, then pushed him to the ground and kicked him, police said.
While beating the victim, the suspects went through his pants pockets and stole $271, and also took his sweater that was valued at $100, police said.
The victim said he and the waitress then walked to his home on Arch Street, where he called police.
He described his attackers as white men, two of whom appeared to be in their 20s and one who was between 30-35 years old and had a full beard, police said. One of the younger suspects had curly hair and wore a red Georgia ball cap, police said, and the other was described only as short.
The victim thought his attackers might be homeless because they were “dusty and hadn't bathed in a month.â€
The victim was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.
