"The Bridge"

Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life
There is a riveting new crime drama on FX called the "The Bridge". The series began when a dead body was placed right on the border line between the US and Mexico. The title refers to the bridge connecting El Paso and Juarez. One of the twists of the story is who claims jurisdiction since the body is half in El Paso and half in Mexico.

Anyway, there is a brief scene in a Juarez brothel involving a 16 year prostitute. It's implied she is being forced into that work by her violent pimp.

I don't get the attraction of so many guys here that want to go to TJ. I'm quite happy with the services of US providers. Especially seeing the working conditions portrayed on this show, I would never, ever visit a Mexican brothel.

Just my 2 cents. Others may feel differently.

Mo, the appeal of a Mexican brothel -- I have never gone -- seems to be a combination of (a) it's like a strip club where you can have great confidence that all of the 40 dancers on duty do extras, and (b) the extras are bargain-priced.

No doubt many of the women working there would rather be working elsewhere (and making better money), but I don't know that you can draw legitimate generalizations from a TV portrayal.

Maybe I'm all sunshine and lollipops, but I think that many hobbyists would stop going if they believed that they were banging 16-year-olds and/or women who were being forced into that work.

I do enjoy the show, it's one of the few things on TV right now that I watch.

@EarlTee most hobbyists enjoy their blissful ignorance knowing full well what is probably going on.

I haven't seen the show (caught about 10 minutes of the pilot so I at least understand your background statement). I am certain the Hollywood dogooder writers made the Mexican brothel seem brutal, offensive and degrading. That is TV, not necessarily real.

First, don't apply US concepts of ethics and morality to Mexican culture as the writers certainly do. Young women in Mexico don't think about sex like you do and they don't care much what you think. Attitudes about prostitution in Mexico, and most other Latin American countries, are very different from the US attitude.

I am sure that trafficking of prostitutes does happen in Mexico and if there are any competent cops left alive in Mexico they will go after the traffickers as soon as they are finished with the drug gangs. But most of the women in border strip clubs and brothels choose to be there. For them it is good money for doing something they like (even if sometimes the guys they do "it" with are unappealing). They can make your money go much further than you do and the tiny price you pay is great pay to them. They only thing they find "degrading" about getting paid to have sex with you is your misplaced pity.

If you don't want to enjoy the talents of the women of Mexico, try instead the Dominican Republic. Most of the clubs in the DR charge a small fee for you to "take out" the dancer of your dreams, but otherwise the costs are about the same. And if you would rather just night club in the DR, you can still find many beautiful young women who are not afraid to tell you that $60 will buy all the sex you can handle (or between $100 and $150 for all night - and they will cook breakfast for you in the morning).

Or try Brazil, Costa Rica, Columbia, Panama, Chile, Argentina . . . Very Different Attitudes!!!!

" try instead the Dominican Republic"

If I pay them enough, will they each me how to hit a baseball too?

Moto, I was there a few years ago and baseball was everywhere. Those kids learn to bunt before they can walk and by first grade can turn a screaming grounder into a double play. I am sure any ten year old there can teach hitting better than most college coaches here!

Changing gears - for those you have seen the show, your thoughts on the scene where the female detective, Sonya, decides to pick up a guy at bar to have sex with.

It was different. Totally emotionless. Like a man. It was wired but kind of strangely funny.

"was weird", not wired

Sorry Dallas but you're wrong. Underage prostitution and sex trafficking are enormously huge problems in Mexico.

Legal doesn't mean that they are morally acceptable. Especially in the deeply catholic countries south of the U.S. Like everything else in Mexico the gangs have a heavy hand in prostitution which means many of those women probably aren't as happy about it as you think.

I can speak for every other country you named, I know the Brazilians are pretty relaxed about sexuality, but even in Costa Rica most of the pros aren't from there.

@motor, she's an interesting character. I think they have to walk a fine line with her to keep her from becoming silly.
