Building a playlist for a club...Suggestions?

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 12:21 AM
This is for real. I am building a playlist for a new club and since I cannot think of every song ever I thought I should open it up for suggestions of your favorite songs to get lap dances to. The club will be located in the southeast so the playlist should trend toward rock and metal with some R&B but minimal hip-hop. Do not base your answers on song length. Part of my job will be re-editing to a standard length.

Butchering a song is not something I like. Play 1970's, 1980's & 1990's Rock music.

Lenny Kravitz - if you can't say no, pretty girl eyes Eurythmics - this city never sleeps Everything else should lean towards 80s & 90s rock with some Rush, Ted Nugent & Kansas thrown in

If they are shortened at all, IMO they are butchered.

"minimal hip-hop". Don't you know that most strippers preference of music genre to dance to is hip hop? If you want the hottest strippers, you better have hip hop. Even TUSCL veterans like Jackslash and Motor will admit that their ATF's preference is hip hop. Shit, Follies is arguably the most talked about club on TUSCL, and from what I hear they pretty much only play hip hop. That being said here are more suggestions. 2 Chainz- I luv dem strippers Waka Flocka Flame- No Hands Chris Brown-Strip French Montana- Pop That Juicy J- Bandz make her dance The Dream- Stripper Love

ranukam - Your statement about Follies my be true at night when it becomes 80% black dancers and customers but during the day shift the DJ really tries to accomodate the dancers music preferences which is difficult if you have 3 or 4 dancers on stage at the same time. He actually tries to pair the dancers up with their likes and it ain't all hip hop.

TUSCL would hate a genre of music that glorifies strippers. Lil Wayne feat. Drake - She Will Jace Everett - Bad Things Blue Foundation - Eyes on Fire

Dean Martin - Sway (Seriously listen to it and see it works well) Donna Summer - Love to Love Me (lol) Brick House - Commodores Some more eclectic choices

Shadowcat- I agree, but wouldn't you say the majority of it is hip hop? I always hear Snowtime complaining about the rap at Follies.

rankam - snowtime is my main wingman. He really hates rap/hip hop. So he is very vocal about it. I'm there more often than he and I would say that rap/hip hip makes up about 40% during the day time.

Drac is right. "Re-editing to a standard length" is butchering. But maybe acceptable in the SC setting.

Thanks for all the good and nearly good suggestions. To clarify a couple of the complaints: 1. Song length is tied to revenue and thus tied to the revenue model. 3 minute song is 20 songs per hour, 4 minute songs are 15 songs per hour, and 5 minute songs are 12 songs per hour. Not having a standard length song puts your revenue potential all over the map. This is not a concert hall. 2. If I wanted to play the songs that the dancers really wanted I would be asking over at the pink site. If a dancer is more worried about her preferences in music than the preferences of the customer she has already proven herself not to have the right kind of customer focus. Frankly I expect that when adding to the playlist in the future the dancers will be listened to. But it will be as something of a reward given after a couple of months tenure. Besides why should the dancer on stage have so much importance? Most of the revenue while she is on stage is actually being earned in the lap dance rooms. That a song will generate more follow on dances is more important to the revenue of the club than whether the dancer gets a couple of extra dollars stage-side.

I think you should only play jam songs like "Freebird"' "Tied to the whipping post" and, of course, "Dark Star". Screw your revenue model and try something different. Nude, stoned hippy chicks twirling about to a 20 minute bass solo. Don't get better than that!

If your business model requires you to butcher songs, go ahead and do it, and don't apologize for it or pretend you're not butchering.

@inno: Have you queried the actual customers you expect in the club, or is this as close as you get pre-opening? Remember, the regular posters here are not very representative of club goers in general, and may not be even *that* representative for the club you're about to open. "Butcher" is a perjorative term. It implies that the song is somehow less enjoyable just because it's shorter. Using the criteria forwarded here, virtually every song ever played on any radio station has been "butchered", as stations routinely shorten songs for format purposes.

@greorgmicrodong...and that is exactly what I will be doing, shortening a song to fit a format. As to being able to talk to the actual potential customers I am on the opposite coast. The owner is saying 'Van Halen and stuff'.

Tt, Dean Martin??? Seriously, that would work for me. I picture my faves on stage swaying to it. A lovely thought. Of course I was a little fellow when it was released, but Dean was one I enjoyed and remember it well.
