The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies raping his wife of five years at the family home in south Cambridgeshire on March 5 last year while her children watched EastEnders downstairs.
On the second day of his trial at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday, defence barrister Laban Leake said his client could not have committed the offence.
Mr Leake said: “On this occasion he said that he wasn't taking Viagra and could not have possibly had sexual intercourse.â€
The woman, who also gave evidence yesterday, insisted she had been raped.
She said her husband grabbed her, pinned her down on her bed and raped her, despite her slapping him “four or five timesâ€.
She added: “I don't know if he had taken Viagra on that day. All I know is what he did to me, and that was rape me.
“He pinned me down on the bed. I tried to push him away but he wouldn't stop.â€
The court heard the woman had ended the relationship in December 2011. However, the pair had continued living together until the tenancy on their home expired and the man pleaded with her to have sex “one last time†before their marriage ended.
But Mr Leake said the woman had “fabricated the rape†to gain sympathy from her friends.
He told her during cross-examination: “You gave the impression of consensual love-making that was so common when you were together in a happy relationship.
“You were responding to his actions and gave every indication that you were consenting.â€
He said the woman had a “history of fabricating stories†– mentioning she allegedly faked her handbag being stolen while she was on her way to pay in more than £1,000 in cheques and cash at a post office. He said she had been cautioned by police – but the jury was told the incident had never been proven.
Mr Leake added: “You made up this rape just like you made up the robbery.â€
The woman replied: “I never made anything up – both of these awful things happened. I have been through hell and back these last few months.â€
The trial continues.
