Except for maybe Detroit and Columbus I think those are among the 10 biggest cities in the country. The big question is what are the NYPD and LAPD doing that Houston and Chicago aren't.

Burglaries as a percent of population would be a better statistic. Detroit might be number one!

Why guess?
fbi.gov

and

fbi.gov

When you look at metropolitan areas (so-called MSA's, which combine city and immediate suburbs) the big cities are not the highest crime areas per capita. The worst areas, by far, are smaller cities and their suburbs. The 5 with the highest burglary rates (burglaries per 100,000 population) in 2011 were:

  1. Pine Bluff, AR (1988/100,000)
  2. Santa Fe, NM (1967)
  3. Fayetteville NC (1936)
  4. Kennewick-Pasco-Richland WA (1893)
  5. Hot Springs AR (1817)

I was surprised to see Columbus on the list.

The burglary rate in Columbus OH MSA is 1165 per 100,000. That is not especially good when you consider the Detroit MSA is 791 per 100,000.

Of course, crime rates are very local. For every area with high crime, there is a low crime area within a mile.
