I actually think the population is getting better. Things like racism, sexism, being anti-gay would have flown in '50s, but the younger generation would just laugh at that shit now.

It's going to be interesting to see them cleanup a lot of the mess the boomers left, but I think they will rise to it.

I have enormous confidence in them, do this is from observing my younger co-workers, and some from seeing strippers pull it altogether after leaving the 'biz.

There is so much access to knowledge now, and I think the younger generation is quite skilled at using it. I have nothing bad to say about them collectively and even admire the progress they are demonstrating with the human race.

Each generation has its slackers and workers, educated and under educated. Based upon my observations, it just seems that the allocations are changing for the worse.

The current younger generations may be more tech savvy than the older generation, but then they possess fewer social skills and consider themselves more entitled.

Just as some say the economic "middle class" is disappearing the same might hold true for young people.

There are many very bright, hardworking kids at one end who are overachievers but at the low end are kids that can't spell or locate Omaha, Nebraska on a map, or identify a photo of Dwight Eisenhower.

The pool of kids in the middle is disappearing and I fear they went to the shallow end.

The lack of geographic knowledge among kids under 30 is appalling. The Millenials (aka Generation Y) that I have talked to honestly could not locate Spain on a world map. One even thought that Spain was next door to Egypt!

When a great deal of other nations's students do better education-wise, it truly is no surprise that there is something lacking in our students. I have never had children (despite what my good buddy, shadowcat says) so I don't have first-hand knowlege of what today's students here in the USA face in their educational pursuits. I do know there is a far too common ignorance in today's 16-25 year olds. One sees it daily in the USA.

Every generation has its idiots. A truism but another truism is that every generation says the next is a bunch of idiots far worse than their own generation.

I suspect I could find plenty of people from shadowcat's generation, from mine, from generation Y, or whatever generation you can name that don't have a clue about geography or some other topic. But there are also plenty that are intelligent, articulate, and successful in each generation. Moreover, I'm convinced the proportion of clueless people would be similar as well. Admittedly, the proportion of clueless university grads is higher, because more people attend university, but the overall proportion of "the stupid"? That hasn't changed.

Folks like juice crack me up. Some of the drama does as well. I wouldn't read the discussions if I didn't have a laugh doing so. I'd probably just use TUSCL to identify clubs when I travel. Some of the comments are juvenile, but that is what makes me laugh. To each his or her own.

We can argue that each generation by nature looks at the next generation as more idoitic, or that the percentage of cluelesss people remains constant all we want. The declines in standardized test scores the past years would be difficult to rationalize if you did not think society as a whole is getting dumber.

Like Dougster said, there are a lot of positives with the younger generation. Like the way we've made things that were major issues (50 years ago) small problems, that don't have major effect on our day to day lives.

But with that, things that were small issues 50 years ago have become major problems today: like kids dropping out of school just for the hell of it, or kids committing suicide because they can't take the shit their classmates dish out.

Remember that the teachers today are the slackers and "hippy types" (my old man's description). They were living off the system and hard wroking parents while many of us were working our asses off getting good grades and working during vacations for spending money. NOw that retirement is getting close these same slackers are filling kids heads with PC bullshit "about only do what makes you happy and forget contributing to society or being polite".
