Police caution young Calgary girls against stripper recruitment push.
Police are warning the stripper lifestyle is not all it's cracked up to be after a national adult entertainment group suggested it would recruit at high schools across Canada, including those in Calgary.
Staff Sgt. Robert Rutledge said is his more than two decades of experience he has interviewed hundreds, if not thousands of strippers, and many inevitably progress into sex trade work. As well, he's found strippers are often victims of abuse and many have the tendency to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.
“They figure if they are in a room dancing without their clothes on in front of a bunch of strangers, that (the sex trade) is just the next step,†Rutledge said.
The Adult Entertainment Association of Canada has indicated the need to recruit hundreds of part-time strippers in Calgary alone after the federal government announced it would discontinue issuing temporary visas or extensions to exotic dancers from other countries.
In an interview earlier this week, association head Tim Lambrinos said girls ages 18-19 would be targeted in high schools, colleges and universities in the months ahead. He also took issue with assertions of links between his workers and the sex trade.
“Sex is prohibited in a strip club . . . if you're talking about escorts and things like that, that's another story,†Lambrinos said.
