The Roving DJ

Recently I was in a club where the DJ had a wireless mic and was wandering around the club rather than sitting in the booth. I figured maybe they were short handed and he was helping clear tables or something. Later I saw this at another club, and it looked like they didn't even have a booth. The DJ just worked the floor.
To me this seems like a really bad idea. The DJ is easily the most obnoxious staff member in the club, so why would I want him wandering around?
So my questions are... Is this a trend or just Detroit / Toledo? Why do they do this? How does he control the music? Or is the wandering guy just an MC, and there's a DJ hidden somewhere?

I think he was just strictly an MC and not a DJ as I think of a DJ as the guy who plays the songs/music.
When I was going it seemed like they would pick someone out of the crowd and try to shame them into buying dances. A couple songs later other people would simply get up and go - obviously the room's energy was gone.
Roving DJ or MC sounds just awful... I hope it's not a trend.
I just sit there and shake my head.
So I don't think this is a DTW thing but a technology thing.
Think about it,with little investment a DJ could roam the room with a remote mic and control the bwd with a smart phone app. I can't wait until they figure out that they can phone it in and not even show up in the club.
Hey think continue to about it if they move to apps how long will it be before we can download an app that will let "US" control the bwd and more important the sound level.
Hearing is wasted on the young.
