The Roving DJ

Recently I was in a club where the DJ had a wireless mic and was wandering around the club rather than sitting in the booth. I figured maybe they were short handed and he was helping clear tables or something. Later I saw this at another club, and it looked like they didn't even have a booth. The DJ just worked the floor.

To me this seems like a really bad idea. The DJ is easily the most obnoxious staff member in the club, so why would I want him wandering around?

So my questions are... Is this a trend or just Detroit / Toledo? Why do they do this? How does he control the music? Or is the wandering guy just an MC, and there's a DJ hidden somewhere?

I know this was kind of the case at Platinum Kisses in Toledo & I mentioned it in my recent review. I don't know if there was a "Hidden" DJ & this guy walking around with a mic was just a MC. Anyway he was annoying! LMAO I agree it is a BAD idea.

I've seen this "roving" type DJ. But the one I was familiar with was more like just an MC - i.e. he would call out the dancers and say something "catchy” about them like "she is so beautiful she was born with a boyfriend ..." or “she has a body harder than Chinese math …”; etc.

I think he was just strictly an MC and not a DJ as I think of a DJ as the guy who plays the songs/music.

Harder than Chinese Math... LOL - sounds like one of the few good ones.

When I was going it seemed like they would pick someone out of the crowd and try to shame them into buying dances. A couple songs later other people would simply get up and go - obviously the room's energy was gone.

Yeah, as others have said, I've seen it too. The guy is an MC but there is still a semi-hidden DJ. Some are good at "energizing" the crowd. Some are boring and just announce the next dancer.

I was the "hidden" DJ at Le Girls in Phoenix for a friend who was the guy on the mic. He would go on stage, introduce the girls, try to keep the crowd energized. I thought he did a good job of it, but I was probably a little blinded in my younger days being in the company of naked women walking around me all the time.

At a good club the DJ should do little more than play music and announce who is up.

Roving DJ or MC sounds just awful... I hope it's not a trend.

I have seen this in TJ, the DJ was walking the floor with a mic, as I seem to be a mark (very white) they alwas come up to me and talk spanish.
I just sit there and shake my head.
So I don't think this is a DTW thing but a technology thing.
Think about it,with little investment a DJ could roam the room with a remote mic and control the bwd with a smart phone app. I can't wait until they figure out that they can phone it in and not even show up in the club.
Hey think continue to about it if they move to apps how long will it be before we can download an app that will let "US" control the bwd and more important the sound level.
Hearing is wasted on the young.

Columbia Platinum Plus on Fri & Sat nights has a DJ & an MC. They constantly talk to each other. They are both obnoxious mother fuckers.

If the DJ is getting attention at a club, its time to find a new club.

Did he have a dogs shock collar on to avoid him from leaving the club or pissing on the patrons?
