Here are some experiences I had to address some of the above questions:

I've still got some Viagra from when it first came out, which was something like 14 years ago, and it still works. So I wouldn't worry too much about the shelf life.

@Alucard: The FDA is not concerned with "personal quantities". The link I posted in the above comment has their explanation. It basically says that they reserve the right to question or inspect imported shipments, but are really only interested in large quantities.

@Ermita_Nights: you're right on dude. There was a pharmacist and doctor on The Today Show a few weeks ago that said expiration dates on medicine is just a marketing technique. At worst, the effectiveness will decrease gradually, but drugs in dry pill form don't go bad the day after the expiration date. The exception to this is antibiotics;'they tend to degrade faster that other inert drugs.

Expiration dates on medicines are marketing *and* liability things. If a medicine doesn't work, and it's after the date, the consumer has little recourse in most cases.
