PHOENIX - Police say a man died after he was shot and then run over by a vehicle early Saturday morning after an altercation at a Phoenix gentleman's club.
Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said officers responded to a call of shots fired just before 1 a.m. at a gentleman's club near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road.
Martos said there was an altercation between two groups of people before bouncers and a security guard broke them up and asked everyone to leave the premises.
The suspect 22-year-old Tekina Latu became upset and retrieved a handgun and pointed it at the armed security guard, Martos said.
Latu fired several rounds at the security guard and struck the guard several times in his ballistic vest, which may have saved his life, he said.
The security guard then reportedly retrieved his sidearm and returned fire.
Latu was hit several times and fell to the ground, Martos said.
During the incident, several customers were scared by the gunfire and tried to drive out of the parking lot when one of them ran over Latu, according to Martos.
Relatives of Latu picked him up and drove him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, he said.
According to investigators and witnesses, it's believed the security guard was acting in self defense, but it will ultimately be determined by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
The security guard was treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries and was not booked.
