Heels
I saw a discussion about stripper heels the other day and it got me thinking about why do strippers wear heels. Had some time in an airport so I did some basic research.
I was a bit surprised by what I found. There are practical and psychological reasons for the footwear. First of all I think everyone would agree that the high heels are probably the article of clothing most associated with the dancers with g-strings and pasties also getting some votes.
I will start with the practical reasons.
Increased Height
The raised heel means the dancer is able to grip higher up on the pole. This allows for more clearance from the floor and provides more room to swing and show off her tricks on stage.
Weight Distribution
The shoes provide additional weight on the dancer’s feet. This allows which for an easier transition between the pole tricks moves and also serves to extend the legs which provides a more pleasing visual.
Faster Spins
The weight of the shoes on the feet creates a faster spin on the pole. Who knew there was so much physics in pole dancing??
Grip
The bottom of the shoes has a grip finish that will prevent the dancer from falling over inadvertently (assuming no impairing substances are involved). Also the rounded shape of the toe part of the shoe is designed to assist in spinning on the stage.
Stick to the Pole
The heels designed for dancing are made from faux leather or plastic materials. The leather helps with the grip on the pole while the PVC material also sticks to the pole with less slipping. This makes climbing the pole easier for the dancers.
Dual Protection
The shoes are designed to protect the dancer’s feet from bangs on the floor, against the pole and toes stubs. They weight and durability also allows the dancer to bang them together during her set to draw more attention to her set. Personally that kind of annoys me.
The design of the shoe could also make it a heck of a weapon if a PL crosses the line in VIP.
There are also psychological reasons for the heels.
Several articles discussed the history of the heel. Ironically men were the first to wear them for horse riding as it provided more stability by improving the foothold in the stirrups. Women initially stated wearing them because it made their feet look smaller. With flat shoes the entire foot was visible under those long wide skirts but the heels just made the toes visible.
The heels worn by the dancers make the legs appear longer and the muscles more taut. At the same time it causes the butt and chest areas to be more pronounced. Each of these was proven in studies to make them more attractive.
Walking in heels (from things I read, never attempted it myself) causes the dancer to strut, sending a signal even if sun-conscious that she is more confident and assertive. Walking in heels also causes the caboose to wag back and forth more, creating yet another message to the male brain that she is more attractive.
I was actually surprised at the number of studies that had been done the wearing of heels. Despite all the risks (more likely to twist ankle, back and lumbar issues possible, etc.) they remain popular. Many women just said wearing heels just makes them feel sexier and better about themselves.
At the end of the day it does appear that dancers wear heels for many more reasons other that all the foot fetish PL’s out there. And as for me, I do love the image of that sexy dancer with those gorgeous legs.
