Wildlife

What kind of wildlife have you seen in your yard or in your area this month? In my backyard, not counting the 20+ bird species (Turkeys, Cardinals, Owls, Woodpeckers, etc.) we see daily we have had 3 coyotes (No squirrell or ground hog problem for 2 years), 2 black Vultures, 4 deer, including one of the largest does I have ever seen and to top it off a bobcat. This morning going to a deposition I had a black bear run right across Main Street in front of my car. I have lived most of my life within 50 miles of where I am now and none of this existed before the late 1990s. Very cool to see wildlife on a daily basis.

Bald eagles and ospreys around the river one block down the street from my house. Foxes and coyotes down at the river as well. I’m happy there’s a lot of fish for the eagles and ospreys. An osprey was eating a big fish on top of the telephone pole in front of my house one day way I came home from work. Foxes and coyotes probably eating squirrels and rabbits - tons of those around.
A big raccoon was eating a good size rabbit on my deck one recent morning. When I scared it away it climbed a tree in my backyard with the rabbit in its mouth - like a mountain lion or something. I’d never seen a raccoon do that.

You guys must live in the woods. Y'all gotta watch for ticks in that situation, that's one you really don't want to see. Black vultures I guess are moving up north, especially if they are up by ski that's typically southern bird but I guess people up here in the NE are saying wtf is that thing they haven't seen them before.

Squirrels, ground squirrels, turkey vultures, and lots of deer. Including an old 3 legged doe with two fawns.

She survived a vehicle collision 15 years ago, her damaged leg finally rotted off, getting pretty slow these days. Good deer habitat around here and a few of the neighbors feed her some.

Usually it's just squirrels and rabbits running around the apartment complex I live at. I have seen deer in the grassy area outside my bedroom window.

Seeing Great Blue Herons on the river nearby is exciting too. Especially when they take off and spread those big wings and fly real low along the river.

I live in a pretty developed area, so I don't really see anything too interesting in terms of wildlife. Mostly just rabbits and squirrels, with the occasional skunk or racoon thrown in for good measure. Actually, I guess I don't usually SEE a skunk, because the second I smell their presence, I tend to get the hell out of there. The last thing I want to do is spook one of those things...

Nobody has mentioned a skunk yet, yeah I’ve seen those in my yard.

The other day two pileated woodpeckers showed up at my bird feeder, they were each the size of a large cat!

One night last summer, I was up in the middle of the night and I saw a shadow go by my window. Scared me to death and when I looked outside there were 11 deer on my street. The neighborhood has a “population thinning” each fall.

Right now around 8:15 just about every night a flock of Canadian geese flies over my house.

The one good thing is I’ve lived here almost 20 years and I’ve only seen one snake in that time period and it was just a small Garter.

Possums, raccoons, deer, foxes, squirrels, chipmunks, turkeys, rabbits, and woodchucks are the ones I see often. I have seen black bears and coyotes, but not in the last month, and they're not that common where I live. Plenty of hawks and numerous other kinds of birds, also.

Lining in a typical suburban area, I also see dear, fox, rabbits, squirrels, and various common songbirds.

I also often see skinks with beautiful iridescent blue scales on the back half of its body.

Sharks have become a nuisance in my backyard recently. They used to stay offshore but now can be found in the Intracoastal waterway and in Biscayne Bay. I have a large nurse shark living under my dock. He gets fed when I’m cleaning fish or when I shoot an iguana and the big lizard falls into the water.

Nothing in the past month, I live in a really developed area and a small plot of land. Having said that have seen Groundhog, deer, skunk, and fox within the past couple of years. Mostly at night, on the cams.

A couple of months ago I saw a flock of Canadian geese feeding on a lawn about 1/2 mile from my house. A few days later I saw a sign in the yard "slow geese crossing". Since then I have seen geese on his lawn again. I have to wonder if he is feeding them.

Skunks, raccoons etc. are all over the place around here. The real issue we have in the fall is the huge number of Turkeys. They screw up traffic all the time. They simply are unafraid of anything, so they won't move for a car and because they are so big people just sit there and get pissed off. The new thing turkeys do is when the flock is crossing the street, the males stand in the street puff up and spread their feathers like crossing guards. They look really awkward taking off, but in flight are graceful as hell.

Quite a few squirrels, too damned many raccoons, a couple skunks, there's a family of foxes somewhere nearby in the neighborhood; I've seen at least one mom and her kits in the spring. Lots of Turkey Vultures, and a Red Tailed Hawk couple I see periodically. There's been at least one doe living in the little copse of trees behind my house. She has twins most years, but I've seen triplets once or twice. There are reports of coyotes, but I've never seen or heard any.

Man, Skifredo is just bad mouthing turkeys. I mean really, must turkeys are dicks, but he’s is going overboard.

This lion thinks that a turkey invaded Fredo’s “alone time”. You know, the time he spends jackin’ off while listening to Grand Funk Railroad and chugging strawberry Yoohoo.

Some poor Jake turkey probably saw Skifredo doing that shit and freaked the fuck out. I think Fredo needs to pay for that Jake’s therapy. ROAR!!!

A few years ago we had a bear spotted in my neighborhood one of our neighbors took some video of the bear walking around the neighborhood, eventually FWC caught and relocated the animal, but folks were very concerned for a few weeks, and last year, my next door neighbor was walking his dogs when an alligator about 8 feet long lunged at them, FWC trapped and euthanized that reptile.

Gophers moles raccoons squirrels occasionally a bobcat and a bear. Neighbor got a picture of a big bear on top of the fence leading against the tree right beside it probably 5 to 6 ft tall. Wouldn't be surprised if I see Sasquatch someday on the webcam the neighbor has.

Wow, this could be a cool thread of your geographically inclined. My list includes javelina, bobcat, roadrunner, hawk, quail, hummingbirds, doves, pesky wabbits, rattlesnake, scorpions, Colorado Sonoran desert toad, finch and several other species of birds, chipmunks, butterflies, cardinals, vultures, and some Wile E. Coyotes on the prowl. Considering I have a fenced yard backed to a wash, I’m only responsible for my territory with the view fence giving me adequate entertainment during my morning coffee. Summer rains really provide for diversity and someday may come across Rick the Mountain Lion, Rick the Desert Tortoise, or even more rare a Rick the Gila Monster!! To this date I’ve only seen one in captivity. I did see Rick the Tarantula on my wall a couple years ago. I think he was on the hunt for some sexy black widows looking for some spiny tarantula cock.

I have left some cat food out at night at the edge of the parking lot in my development. In the morning, most of it has been eaten. I haven't seen any stray cats. There must be some kind of wildlife that enjoys cat food.

^ ha ha- I became familiar with javelinas on my trip to Sedona. Signs on the trash cans at the AirB&B said to secure the lids with the bungees because of Javelinas. I thought they were birds. That night a horde of them were blocking our street feasting on the contents of some trash cans they knocked over. The belligerent bastards would not move out of the street.

We have this conversation a lot, it seems. My house backs up to preserve with water, so I don't even need to step outside my pool cage to see:
Bears, bobcats, turkeys, deer, owls, herons, storks, ibis, egrets, finches, cardinals, bluejays, eagles, hawks, ospreys, racers (snakes), water snakes, king snakes, coral snake (one), rat snakes, palm rats, squirrels, coyote, Florida quail, bats, frogs, toads, gopher tortoises, southern box tortoises, snapping turtles, sliders (more turtles), iguanas, monitors, tegus, anoles, otter, spotted gar, longnose gar, pelicans, anhingas, lumpkins, feral hogs, armadillos, possums, raccoons, cottonmouths, turkey buzzards, ducks, and the ubiquitous American Alligator. I have also seen the cryptid known as the Florida Black Dog, and I never believed in cryptids before that.
