GA Town Buys and Closes strip club

California
Cafe Risque in Lavonia, Ga., was bought by the town and then closed immediately for good. Do you think this is something that can start happening to all the good clubs or just a random thing in a small town?

I think this was a pretty extreme case, besides, they had to pay a $1 million for it. I doubt a lot of towns that might care, can justify shelling out that kind of money.

Where did they come up with the $1 million?? I hope that town's other, more serious problems were all solved before they made this move...

Silly of them. Sounds to me like they're just not smart enough to hire a good lawyer. Plenty of Christian-right-wing advocacy groups would have worked with them, paid for legal counsel, and gotten something to stick on that club, I bet, if they were willing to bother to try to get around that "grandfather" problem mentioned in the story. Throwing money at the problem? Makes it seem like the town just wanted the solution now and easy.

The Town of Gulstream,FL (Near Delray) just paid 3.9mm to buy and shut down a club , Platinum Girls on Federal Hwy.
If all towns could afford it, they would shut them down !

In the early 80's, San Diego seriously renovated downtown. I knew a stripper who bought a very established strip club for only 50k. She sold it a year later for ten times that to developers.

Is every small town in the South being run by stupid people?? They can't think of anything else to spend taxpayer money on than buying up businesses that are generating actual tax revenue for the town and then closing them down??

Sounds like the taxpayers got FS on this.

Having lived in the south for 25 years I am not surprised by this move. This is typical of the "religious right" trying to legislate morality and using the tax payers money to push their agenda. I also wouldn't be too surprised if some of the same politicians who pushed for this go a kick-back from the folks who sold the club and made a quick million.

I moved to the Atlanta area in 1987 from SO. CAL. Talk about shock! I have seen some things improve. The "NEW" South. liquor laws have improved a lot. Strip club laws have gone the other way since the Olympics were held here. From what I have read on here, I-75 through GA and northern FL are loaded with hole in the wall strip clubs that cater to truck drivers. Get a burger and see some titties. But that is all. I doubt that much will change in my life time.

They could have used that $1 million to replace the aging cinderblocks in all the town's trailer parks.

Plus, now they have to build, what, 3-4 Waffle Houses to employ the laid-off strippers?

    Friggin' waste.
