THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A Franklin County judge has ordered the temporary closing of a West Side strip club where undercover officers said they had witnessed prostitution and drug dealing.
Municipal Court Judge Harland H. Hale issued a temporary restraining order Wednesday against the Foxy Lady, 3279 W. Broad St. He scheduled a hearing on Friday for arguments about whether the nightclub should be closed permanently.
The city is asking the court to declare the business a public nuisance, said Assistant City Attorney Jody Spurlock.
The city's complaint says detectives from the vice squad made undercover visits to the nightclub from April 9 through April 16 and "were able to observe repeated felonious conduct."
The complaint says that two female employees were soliciting prostitution and one employee was trafficking in drugs.
Between November and April, police officers were dispatched to the Foxy Lady "at least 30 times on such incidents as shots fired, burglaries, prostitution and illegal possession of firearms," according to the complaint.
A call to the owner of the business, identified in court documents as Michael L. Knopp, was not returned yesterday.
Spurlock said the city often files nuisance complaints against vacant properties and crack houses but is increasingly using the strategy against problem nightclubs.
Last month, Hale ordered the Shark Bar & Grill, 2461 E. Dublin-Granville Rd., to close after a gunfight in the parking lot left one man dead and two wounded. In April, he ordered the permanent closing of Downtown Dolls, 1336 W. Broad St., where three people died in two shootings in 2006.
Dispatch reporter Bruce Cadwallader contributed to this story.
