Hey guys, here’s another alternative to getting to the border from the San Diego International Airport. This way, it’s not necessary to ride the 992 bus to the Blue Line trolley stop at America’s Plaza downtown. Lately, I hear some of the homeless/mentally ill folks in the downtown area have been harassing passengers awaiting the trolley.

I had a buddy who took the airport shuttle to the Blue Line Old Town stop - a much better area he said, where you shouldn’t be harassed. Something to consider.

Need something with a little more detail. A buddy of mine said that you can use the rental car shuttle to get near the Blue Line, but I have never tried it. And I have never seen anything at the AP specifically marked as an Old Town shuttle.

Google says:

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority is proud to introduce the “San Diego Flyer,” a free to customers electric shuttle bus service between San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Old Town Transit Center. The electric shuttle buses operate seven days a week, with an average arrival every 20-30 minutes. Pick up and drop-offs are timed to meet the first and last Trolley, Coasters, Amtrak trains, and MTS busses with the first pick up at 4:45 a.m. and the last pick up/drop off at 12:30 a.m.

The San Diego Flyer shuttle buses are recognizable through a branded light orange wrap adorned with plane icons, the word “Flyer” across the side of the buses, and the SAN logo. Currently, the buses stop at Old Town Transit Center, Terminal 1, and Terminal 2. Passengers at SAN will be picked up and dropped off at transportation islands at each terminal. The stops and intervals of service will be assessed and shuttle service will be adjusted to meet increased demand if needed.

The service is provided on six 2019 Endera E-450 Electric Vehicle (EV) Cutaway Shuttles which will be powered by 100 percent sustainable energy through charging stations located on airport property. The EV shuttles are equipped with air conditioning, luggage racks, and an ADA ramp.

Thanks for all the info guys. This seems to be the opposite direction compared to the 992 to American Plaza, going north instead of south .

Also, some Blue Line trolleys start and end at American Plaza so there might be less trains going to the Old Transit Center.

I understand though, the Old Transit Center is a safer experience.

speaking for myself I have absolutely no experience of taking any shuttle or trolley from the airport down to San Ysidro.

I drive from Arizona and Park at the Palm Avenue Trolley Stop in South Chula Vista / Imperial Beach and then take the tr..olley down to the end of the line in San Ysidro and then walk across the border.

then usually I take the Zona shuttle to Hong Kong Club or a ruta bus to Centro and walk three or four blocks from there to the hotels that I mentioned before. I highly recommend taking the Zona shuttle because it is safer and less likely to encounter the bandits with badges.

@justinyoo: that’s why I put the info on the San Diego Flyer on here. Couple of years ago while waiting for the Blue Line trolley at America’s Plaza, a homeless man yelled vulgarities at me, then came charging at me as if he was going to throw a punch. I backed up and was concerned he was going to go through with it. Fortunately, the manager of the sub sandwich place at America’s Plaza saw what was happening, came out, and chased the guy away. He told me the dude regularly hung out in the area and always harassed folks waiting for the trolley.

I’ve been back to America’s Plaza since then and haven’t seen the homeless guy who threatened me. Still, I’m wary. Hence the alternative way to get to the Blue Line.

Wow, that sucks @OpIllini96. Thanks for sharing.

I had a really crazy incident on the last trip on the Blue Line. This had nothing to do with American Plaza but your crazy person reminded me. I ended up getting off at Harborside and then taking an Uber straight to the airport from there. It was wild, guy threatening to have to eat the lady sitting in front of me to hide evidence after needing to bash her head in with a skateboard he had. He was holding himself back so hard.
He called 911 to telling them he need to protect himself and the lady was just sitting there. I didn't hear the anything in the news so I'm guessing nothing happened after I got off. I was hoping the lady would have gotten off but she just sat there.

I ride the trolley daily to work from the border to university and I've seen it all. Downtown stations run thru the homeless capital.

Yes, downtown is where a lot of homeless come on and off but my issues have been Palomar plus or minus a station like H street.

Yet to be honest, I have only witnessed issues and nothing happened to me personally. This last trip with the crazy, I just chose to get off as a better safe than sorry reaction.
