Football season begins tomorrow, with this weekend having a Friday night game, in addition to the regular schedule. Football dominates the airwaves four out of the next five nights. Will you celebrate it? How? Do you even care? What's the best part?

For me the season will be filled with....remembering the past because the Patriots are going 5-12. I will get by with weekly football pools, the last man standing pool (Last year's winner took home 133k) fantasy football and betting. First weekend will be Vegas baby, where football is King this weekend.

A good friend and I have started the tradition of spending all Sunday at a huge sports bar, eating, drinking and watching all the games on their roughly bajillion TV screens. It also means a lot more to talk about with my dad.

I've set my fantasy lineup for the week, barring announcement of some injury.

I haven't lived in broadcast range of my football team in over twenty years. Between that and all the annoying rule changes over the years I have pretty much lost interest in watching. Besides, September is still baseball season.

What do you mean football season begins tomorrow? College football has already started and that's when football season started. It jumps ramps up more with the NFL joining in.

As a little kid we lived across the street from SU football Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. His daughter use to babysit my brother and me; moved to the 'burbs when I was in 3rd grade. Schwartzwalder said Ernie Davis was a good kid and Jim Brown was a real PITA. The movie, The Express, is very accurate right down to Cassy his white Standard Poodle, and the CGI of Achbold Stadium (built 1907) was incredibly accurate. A few houses down was SU Lacrosse Coach Roy Simmons, and his son (last I knew) is still coaching.

JAY $100.00 Buy in. We expect 1450 in the pool this year. A secretary at a large NY law firm is tasked with running the league as her job at the firm.
I stopped watching college football when they became minor league professionals.
Weird football note: we used to play 2 person team tackle football in a friend's back yard. David Blatt, former coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

My fantasy team is ready to go. I'm going to need all the side distractions I can get this year. The Pats are atrocious and so are the two FL college teams that I follow. If not for fantasy football, I'd have no port in the storm, lol.

My question to y'all for the first Friday night game. What's the better strip club city Baltimore or KC?
If you had to pick the best club from either metro, which would it be and which one is better? I'm assuming Ritz for Baltimore?

Season ticket holder for the NYG. First tailgate is this Sunday. We go all out with the food, nothing traditional. Shrimp cocktail, flatbread pizza, ribs, sausage bread, cajun scallops. It's all about the tailgate, if they win, it's a bonus! Do I think the Giants have a chance? Wishful thinking, but I hope they get at least 8 wins this year...!

@blah, the B'more/KC game is tonight. But to answer your question, I'd say neither. I doubt that you're going to find a lot of die hard fans going to the strip clubs to watch the game. Heck in KC they'll be at the game in person.

If you want to capture football fan money, IMO and from what I've seen, the best approach is to find a big Sunday 1pm game and work in a strip club the Saturday night before. There are, for example, contingents of Bills and Steelers fans that travel to all of the team away games and they party in the towns they hit.

If you HAD to choose between a club night in KC or Baltimore, which would it be?

Buzkill here: I boycott football at all levels. It slowly but surely and permanently damages the brains of talented young men, all for the entertainment of the masses and to further line the pockets of already wealthy individuals. I want no part in such barbarism
Like all of my principles, however, this one is subject to compromise. If the Eagles get past the first playoff game I’ll check in because I like the energy it brings to the city. Also, during a second OTC encounter yesterday with a front runner for current favorite, my companion mentioned that she wanted her 14 year old son ( also named Manuel, BTW) to go out for football. I didn’t say shit
OTOH, I’ll break out the soapbox during more casual encounters at the club if dancers ask if I like football. Invariably, they will ask “What’s CTE?”

In High School, the team played on Saturdays. Those of us who had quit as juniors or seniors played no pads, no rush count, 11 on 11 football on Sundays. On Monday it was obvious who had played in each game.
No concussions or fractures playing football. Two concussions, one crack in the skull skiing. Ever wonder what "heading" a soccer ball going 30 mph must do to the noggin?

@Ski: Same here on the team schedule. Saturday morning games are a MA tradition. Those late November games got rough with the cold weather, especially when it was wet outside.

But down here it's all about the Friday night lights. Big stadiums and large crowds included. It's night and day, literally and figuratively, from small crowds of die hard parents who used to sit in those small open metal bleacher setups during my High School years. Around here HS games are a community event.

@Ski - I just listened to a segment on 98.5 on soccer and concussions. Sounds like it's not just the headers, it's people cracking heads when they each go up for one. I hear that women's soccer in particular is bad... second worst sport for concussions after football. My old boss' daughter got some permanent damage from 4 years of high school + 2 years of college soccer.

Oh, fuck football in the ear. There was a time it was compelling enough to hold our undivided attention. Now they know full well the at-home viewers are primarily doing something else, with the football game in the background. No way it can hold my attention with all the commercials and shots of celebrities breaking up the action. And it is crazy how the officiating got totally arbitrary at exactly the same time betting became widely legal.

Am I a bitter old man? YES! It used to be like religion to me. Now taunting is the highest form of expression. They apparently concluded that is what it takes to keep the youngsters looking up from their little screens once in a while.

Most, if not all professional football players would be earning 1-10% of what they earn now without football. They accept the risk of permanent injury for the money. We think of football as an unsafe job, but no one dies, no one loses a limb. Go to a mining town out west and look at the locals; many are maimed from hard physical dangerous labor that sure as hell pays less than football. Football, as with the rest of society is being subjected to a multipronged, multi-year assault on anything and everything deemed "male". You know, toxic masculintity makes people unsafe. Mental health is really important. Putting your own safety and mental health over all the concerns of everyone else on earth should be everyone's goal. We live in a cowardly, pussy country now, thanks to progressives and democrats. Look at those unamerican assholes chanting support of Hamas and Hezbollah, two organizations filled with porcine garbage.

I had Derrick Henry last night. Hope Lamar isn't going to get all the team's rushing yards but he did have a score. My opponent had Mahomes, Kelce, and Rice; she has more points than I do but I have a lot more still to play. I'm not worried.

^ Mahomes did alright but not great from a fantasy perspective. He only had one passing TD and also had an INT. His underperformance vs. his projected points could hurt me this week.

I just don’t get the alure of fantasy football. To me it’s like looking through the window of a bakery while eating your rice cakes, wishing you were eating a donut yet watching everyone else at the counter purchasing your goods.

@rickdugan - My opponent this week drafted Mahomes second overall. Inexplicably also drafted Joe Burrow. Also drafted both Travis Kelce and George Kittle. That's a top QB and a top TE who are going to ride the pine every week, at the expense of RB/WR.

Mahomes has better receivers than last year but he wasn't a fantasy monster then either, he might just be like Brady for most of his career who was a better real life QB than fantasy QB.

I have C.J. Stroud (and inexplicably late-ass in the draft Justin Herbert).

Google search for minimum NFL salaries: (2024 figures)
Rookies- $795K, 1 year veteran- $915K, 3yr veteran - $1.055M ,
7 yr. plus veteran - $1.21 M.
How long would it take for you horndogs to make $795K in earnings ? (W2's )

Average NFL career: 3.3 years; Average gross earnings over the course of average career: $3 Million. Deduct agent commission: $300K, Taxes $1.2 Million, and exorbitant cost of living over the 3.3 year period due to NFL lifestyle, a prudent, mature, disciplined and otherwise average rookie might be able to net $500-600K in savings. Probably a lot less if he can’t shake off the handlers and hangers on (including the women, maybe especially the women).
If you were 21 and somebody told you they would stake you to $600K if you would take a drug that is highly likely to cause long term and permanent damage to your brain that would impair your ability to function by the time you were middle-aged, would you accept the offer? If you are 40 or over now, would you think that such a choice would be prudent? With accrued interest over 40 years, the $600K might cover a decade or two in a residential care facility

NFL players and strippers have a lot in common in that both assume the fast cash will last forever and their bodies won't give out. We all know extras girls origin stories are often girls who made bank for doing very little at 18/19 discovering they had to offer more at some point in their aging process.

Strippers are less likely to suffer a career ending injury.

Anyways, Vikings will beat the Giants today!

My fantasy team is up 44. I've played all my team, opponent has RB David Montgomery (i.e. 2nd string Detroit RB) left to play. Time to worry about playing my best friend next week.

Cincy looked like pigshit, playing against the Pats' beat-to-shit offensive line. I know they start slow but Joe "Season-Ending Injury Waiting to Happen" Burrow and the Bengals always seem to play less than the sum of their talent. I think the Pats will still have a bad year but this one's more on Cincy.

My Browns, down to their 23482394th left tackle, played as well as I expected. The Watson trade, and the Broncos' trade for Wilson, will go down as the two most lopsided trades in league history.

One of my iron rules of fantasy football (that has made me quite successful) is to never place trust in any Bengals or Jets. I broke that and drafted Rodgers last year, and learned my lesson.
