OT: Elon and Twitter

Funny that one of the biggest news stories on Reddit hasn't been mentioned here at all, probably because most of you aren't on Twitter and are too old to be Elon Fanboys. Thoughts? Dude spend $44b on a company he seems to be destroying and making himself look like a tool in the process. Somehow he hasn't dragged down Tesla stock as collateral damage... Yet. There's talk Twitter may be bankrupt by next year. That's an impressive collapse.

Society would be far better without Twitter, Tic Toc, snapchat etc. They serve no valid purpose at all.

I still think Elon's "crazy like a fox." His negotiation for Twitter was full of bombastic statements. In the end, he could give a shit about 280 characters and $8 a month. He wants to make Twitter the American WeChat (that is, the "everything app.") I'm more interested in what he does there than core Twitter.

I agree with Tetra. The Woke crowd is all up in arms. But who cares about them anymore anyway. Elon knows what he is doing. I may sign up for Twitter just to show support. Anybody know how to tweet ?

I've been on twitter over a decade. During covid, lots of accounts got banned, for "misinformation" which now is real information. Twitter was far too left the last 5 years, The pendulum now swings and Elon wants a happy medium where people discuss topics and pay $8 for a checkmark. And click ads.

I just look at the women that can show more of their body than other platforms and some sports topics. Those haven't been affected so don't notice the difference. He pissed off the left so naturally most press about him will be negative. I think he'll survive whatever may happen.

Ski said "Society would be far better without Twitter, Tic Toc, snapchat etc. They serve no valid purpose at all." Except that for a lot of small and mid-size businesses and side gigs (including mine) many of those social media platforms provide much needed revenue from sales, sponsorships, partnerships, etc. Social media provides marketing and customer engagement to a lot of businesses at a cost they can afford. Also, once you learn how to use use them and filter what you see, they can provide a lot of information that ranges from very interesting to incredibly useful. So, I enjoy it from both a business and entertainment perspective. I'm neither a fan or foe of Elon. I will say that my business-facing Twitter is performing poorly in the wake of his taking control. I'm also getting exponentially more follows and junk replies from blatant spam accounts. Fortunately, it's a platform that has never figured prominently for me as compared to others. I still hope that he achieves some degree of stability and effectiveness, for the sake of the users who have more invested in the platform.

I’m not old and I never been on twitter, more out of social media fatigue. How does twitter stay relevant going forward with the new competition (Truth via Trump- just kidding) and all other outlets? My stance on staying away from twitter has been justified IME, but to each his own.

I am old and never been on Twitter I once set up an IG because a dancer deleted her Facebook and started using IG. But I don’t see her anymore I don’t follow the story, only on the fringes, but what I think is ironic is that several years ago all the woke Hollywood progressives drove Tesla’s (Ed Begley Jr for ex) but now that same work crowd is hating on Musk

It isn't like Twitter is the only tech company, or even the only social media company that is making drastic staffing changes right now. While Twitter has cut 3,700 jobs that pales in comparison to Facebook cutting 11,000 jobs and Amazon cutting 10,000 jobs. Sure Twitter is a larger percentage of it's workforce but it isn't like it is the only company struggling and cutting its workforce. I imagine there will be a lot more layoffs announced in the next few months and next couple of years from a variety of companies. The tech sector is taking a major hit right now but other sectors are going to face the same thing soon. The only bright side is it will finally cool off the housing market and general inflation since so many will lose their jobs. Looking like 2008 all over again. As for Elon Musk, he has done a lot of great things in advancing the auto industry and helping to pioneer private space tourism. He also puts in way more time and effort into continuing to grow his companies than most CEOs would ever consider. However, he is one of the most self absorbed and narcisistic egomaniacs on earth. His personality ranks right up there with Trump and SJG.

@motorhead: "I didn’t know girls got naked on Twitter - might have to sign up" I guess I shouldn't call it "porn", since it's mostly advertisements for onlyfans, fansly, etc., but many of them are explicit. I've found a few local girls advertising their OF by posting nudes or partial nudes.

^ With the chances of a recession escalating, my guess is a lot of advertisers will be resorting to direct targeted advertising, and unless placement is strictly regulated you will see an exodus of advertisers from these large, mostly unmoderated sites, everyone is afraid of getting linked to a anarchist like Kanye or others like him, and damaging their brand, I don't think Elon is disciplined enough to control the outflows.

"Dude spend $44b on a company he seems to be destroying and making himself look like a tool in the process. There's talk Twitter may be bankrupt by next year. That's an impressive collapse." And China Donnie took a $250 million company from Fred and bankrupted it seven or eight times, and is now totally owned by the banks to the tune of $4 billion (that we know of). God knows how much he owes to Putin, but it's gotta be a lot considering how much he sucks his dick in the media. You can't expect right-wing shitheads like Musk and Trump to do well in business long term. They let their egos and delusions overtake them eventually, and lose all the common sense that true money wizards like Buffett, Gates, and Bezos possess in spades.

This is payback to all the right wing clowns who think people like Musk and Trump are good at business. Remember all those GM workers at the Lordstown factory who voted for China Don, only to get rewarded with the plant closing permanently in 2019. What about that big Foxconn chip factory in Wisconsin that Beijing Donnie promised his voters would get over 10,000 great jobs? LOL, never even laid a brick. Hahaha Musk made his billions marketing those coastal progressive status symbols called Teslas. Now after he's taken their money, they're butthurt that he turns out never to have been one of them. And he'll keep taking progressives' cash, not that $8 a month is anything to him, but because it's a show of submission from left celebrities, journalists, and other such freak shows. It's hilarious!

I've found twitter to be truly useful and entertaining (to me) while watching sporting events, especially NFL Football. I follow every sports reporter of interest to me in any sport (locally and nationally) and their sideline reported tweets for 11 years on twitter have always been more current and informed than the info provided by any broadcast team in the booth. There's always plenty of time during a football game to watch a twitter scroll on a second screen and not wait until half time to know that a player of importance has been ruled out. The only pragmatic use I get from twitter is during a storm, whereby I follow the local authorities and local news twitter accounts for a sense of what's going on in the 2 or 3 locations of important to me. As for political opinion, well of course I come here for the real worldly opinion!
  • Thick-5-Incher

"Musk made his billions marketing those coastal progressive status symbols called Teslas" Tesla will be the next business that Musk drives into the ground. Losing a $50 billion investment like Twitter is a clear sign he's a born loser like Trump! Plus, loyal Democrats like Bezos and Gates are still making BILLIONS every year off your rightie dollars. Rich leftwing guys ALWAYS get the last laugh, assholes! :-)

I don’t use social-media – it doesn’t interest me for the most-part – I use TUSCL b/c strip-clubs interest-me. Only social-media that interests me is YouTube (if that is considered social-media) b/c it has a lot of content. w.r.t. Elon and Twitter – my first-thought it why pay 44-billion if he could start his own platform from scratch (I’d assume it would be much cheaper and he has the branding to make it popular almost instantly). Perhaps it wasn’t about starting a social-media platform as much as it was taking it away from the hands of leftist-extremists – the left has proven that the only way for their “message to gain transaction” is by shutting-down any contrary-opinions – it has also come-out how social-media platforms, and most of all Twitter, was colluding hand-in-hand w/ the Biden administration to sensor what the Biden administration wanted censored (the government basically doing an end-around the 1st-ammendment). All Elon has stated is that there would be more-freedom on Twitter w.r.t. what is posted vs it being only-one-sided – yet the lefties lost-it b/c apparently they feel “free speech” is only limited to their personal lefty beliefs – most social media today blocks things that are true if they don’t pass the woke-test; and allow lies if they fit-the-allowed-narrative.

As someone who is just a user I haven't noticed any differences other than people saying groomer again and now the left gets fact checked for context on some of their blatant lies. The reaction to Musk's takeover shows the power of the left from their control of so many corporations, media, and government organizations. The pulling of advertising and the threats from politicians to investigate him as a security risk. He's also an example of how they will vilify anyone who goes against them just like they did with Trump and will do with whoever is the next Republican presidential candidate. I enjoy the parody accounts on twitter like: Youth football coaching legend [view link] Award Winning Forensic Diversity&Inclusion Expert [view link] Papi, you should check out Twitter for people accounts like Libs Of TikTok, Christopher Rufo, Matt Walsh. They do a good job of exposing some crazy leftist shit going on in government, education, and corporations. One of the funnier things to happen surrounding Musk's takeover was how a couple of guys calling themselves Ligma and Johnson (Lick My Johnson) fooled media into thinking they were fired Twitter employees. I don’t know if Twitter will survive the exodus of employees, but the arrogance of those employees as the leave is amazing. The engineers might land on their feet, but good luck to everyone else who thinks they will land another six figure job where their workday is comprised of an hour of zoom meetings from home.

The usual cast of lefties here gloating that Twitter--the left's means of browbeating and cancelling--is going tits up under new leadership. Gee, it isn't like Meta and Amazon and other big tech companies haven't laid off a shit ton, is it? How many times do I need to tell you, the 280 character platform isn't what matters. It doesn't take teams of coddled engineers with office nap pods and wine taps to maintain that. The new game is just starting.

“it's called making a stand.” Here’s how things work in the real world. You get paid for doing things that are useful to your business. And, your boss decides what is useful. If you don’t want to do the things that your boss tells you to do, you should go somewhere else. It happens all the time. It’s normal. What is not normal is deciding your boss has the wrong political beliefs and publicly criticizing him. Then, expecting to keep your job. That is not “ taking a stand”. It’s being an entitled, immature asshole.

A good software engineer can be 10 times as productive as a bad software engineer, or even an average one. Elon appears to think Twitter can function with 1,500 employees, instead of 7,500 employees, if they are talented and dedicated. From what I’ve gathered from the people being fired, he might just be right. If this works, we’re going to see a lot of tech companies getting rid of their foosball tables. And, cutting their workforce in half.

Twitter's biggest failing is that turned into an Orwellian echo chamber full of liberal lies, disinformation, gaslighting, and talking points. That it somehow became a reputable news source while boosting and suppressing posts based upon the prevailing political sentiment of the coders is simply abhorrent. I am glad that Musk has purchased it, and I hope he turns it into something unrecognizable from its current form. The world is better off without Twitter.

Let's be blunt here, its primarily one NGO known as the ADL that started the mainstreaming of socio-political censorship a long time ago. Other left of center pressure groups and political parties have now adopted the same philosophy because the ADL made it acceptable but it started with the anti-Anerican, anti-freedom ADL. I had my first run in with thlhis organization or its lackeys in high school and then again working for a law firm in my 20's I was privy to some shall we say "not for public consumption" correspondence from this group. They are evil and conniving beyond what any of you could even imagine. That is what Musk, himself half Jewish, is up against.

This isn’t meant to be a political comment. Musk buying twitter and trying to shake up the employees and culture reminds me of Trump saying he wanted to drain the swamp. It’s easier said than done. However, the main difference is that Musk is an owner and he can clean house. It’s what’s left over (of the company) that might not be what he wanted.
  • Thick-5-Incher

"Musk buying twitter and trying to shake up the employees and culture reminds me of Trump saying he wanted to drain the swamp. It’s easier said than done" Ole Musky bought into the China Donnie propaganda about "I alone can fix it". Dumbo Donnie didn't do anything alone except tank his companies and destroy all faith in American government as we've known it for the past 40 years. Twitter has been a swirling cesspool for years and nobody can save it. The main problem with social media sites in general is that anyone with enough money can start a competing site that will quickly poach all your customers and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. Remember when MySpace was king of the hill in the late 2000's and they thought they would last forever? A few years later, it was a ghost town because Zuckerberg swooped in with Facebook and nuked them into oblivion.

Never been a big Twitter user but I understand it's usefulness in business/advertising. I'm not a right wing fanatic or a big left wing extremist. My question as a black man is always, "How does this situation get me closer to freedom?" Just context to my thoughts. Elon Musk reminds us that Twitter is a privately owned forum that the public has taken for granted to some degree, so they get upset. Remember, it's all about financial gain for the owner in the end. Don't get caught up in the Oke-Doke.

From Fortune magazine: “ I conclude that criticism of Elon Musk is bizarrely off base, because Musk has overnight changed Twitter’s net (profit) margin from negative 20% to approximately plus 28%, more than Apple or Google. I am using annualized percentages based on Twitter’s most recent quarterly filings, for the period ending 6/30/22. These documents are freely available at the SEC’s website.”
  • mark94
“cause he looks like shit!” That’s what happens when you stay awake for 96 hours, crunching a project. That time working changed Twitter from losing 20% to making 28%. That’s works out to something like $500,000,000 per hour based on saving his $44 Billion investment. That’s worth a bad photo.

^That's bullshit, twitter has never returned a legitimate profit in the sixteen years it has been in existence, what you're looking at are hyped figures for advertising revenues, and now that the company is private, the reported figures cannot be trusted.
  • mark94
The math is real simple. By downsizing from 7,500 ees to 1,500, Twitter is saving around $1 Billion per year from salary, benefits, and office overhead. Twitter lost $250M in 2021 and $1.2 Billion in 2020. So, moving from loss to profitability with downsizing. The number of Twitter users has increased in recent weeks. After making a big show of leaving, advertisers are coming back. Charging for blue check adds a revenue stream. But, 25 says this all bullshit, so I guess that settles it. How can you argue with his logic ?
  • Tetradon
