Mitt Romney learned about the Republican Right I think it was 62 or 64, when his mother ran for a Michigan US Senate Seat.
Romney identifies with the Republicans, but not with their more extreme and irresponsible side.
And of course the party activists and the primary voters are more from this extreme side.

Lindsay Graham seemed visibly shaken when Trump pulled the troops off of that spot on the Syria-Turkey border.
Romney is trying to be a sensible conservative, and that is probably how he sees his father.
But the Republican Party makes this impossible, as Mitt found when his mother ran for the US Senate.
