PBS is shutting down

Avatar for dustyj

PBS is shutting down because of funding cuts by this administration. It gets worse every fucking day! Cuts to clean air and water. Cuts to anything educational. Cuts to cancer research and being able to detect infectious diseases that could be spreading. Why the fuck does anyone support this shit?

The existential threat is the Constitution becoming a joke. It requires the President to faithfully execute the law. Impoundment mocks that requirement. If Congress actually votes to end funding to PBS, right or wrong, it's legit under the Constitution. I'm more worried about the millions that will die because of the actually import USAID programs that disappeared.

I watch it as well. I think it's despicable that a "president" who can read anything more complex than a McDonalds menu has seen fit to destroy this institution.

Fascists fear an educated population. So they attack universities. Education. Public institutions.

Why is sesame street dangerous? It teaches compassion and basic reading skills.

Less than 4 years from now, there will be another president.

That president could restore funding to PBS.

But they won’t.

Blame Trump if you want but he’s just doing what others would like to do but can’t get away with.

PBS isn't shutting down. From what I've read, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is shutting down. It funds PBS and NPR. This is because the BBB eliminated its federal funding. Not the president. Congress.

PBS and NPR aren't shutting down, although some rural stations may fail.

I hear Air Canada has specials for those wanting to leave the country. Yet you won't because you don't really believe this is some hurr durr fascist dictatorship.

Somehow the republic lasted a couple hundred years before PBS.

Back in the 80’s I used to be a regular contributor to PBS during their fund drives. I enjoyed some of their programming and thought they deserved my money. Until I received a particular nasty phone call asking why I hadn’t followed thru with my promised pledge. I had my cancelled check in hand. (This was back in the days when banks returned your checks). That was the time I ever donated PBS money. They have the same unethical management as the United Way.

If PBS and NPR had followed ethical guidelines for unbiased reporting of the news and public events, there could be a weak case for arguing for a federal loan to help them bridge to a new public funding stream. Instead, they have been hopelessly partisan for decades - this is unacceptable for media supported by tax dollars. Our federal government has also been deficit spending for generations. Unnecessary programs had to be cut. Of all the many cuts and eliminations made in USAID, CFPB, Dept of Ed., I think everyone can agree that the CPB was the least important of these.

Most of us are taxpayers here, and all of us should want our taxes to be used efficiently to fund a government beholden to the people. If you really believe that tax dollars should be used for partisan political messages, domestic propaganda, and young child indoctrination, then you simply do not understand America and our founding principles of a democratic Republic.

I don't even know where to find PBS. All I know is back when there were only 7 TV stations, it was on channel 13 where I lived, and that's where kids watched Sesame Street. And I never heard of NPR until people began saying how liberally biased it is. Is that a radio station you listen to on AM radio, or is it some streaming shit now? If these two things went away, not only would I not care, I wouldn't even notice.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Project 2025 people covertly groom some Lee Harvey Oswald type wackjob to assassinate Trump. Kennedy's assassination allowed LBJ to steamroll any opposition, even though he had not been popular previously. Grassroots MAGA doesn't love anyone like they love Trump. But they might become Vance diehards, if he was bearing the standard of a martyred Trump.

Look at how hard the youngest are turning Republican!

x.com

Dems' mistake lay in thinking an electorate fed up with a pandemic and Trump's abrasiveness wanted hardcore leftist policies.

The difference is, now we don't have to pretend Lizzo is as hot as Sydney Sweeney, or that "diversity" is the greatest goal, or that Dylan Mulvaney is a woman, let alone a desirable one. Add to that, that PBS is an essential government function.

If you think that makes America so bad, just fucking leave. Go to the UK where opinions that hurt your widdle biddy feewings will get them sent to jail, or victims of Pakistani rape gangs are dismissed by actual police.

Or just fuck up your own blue cities as a warning to the rest of us. Just keep your messes within city limits, k?

Why don't you move to one of those poverty stricken states that votes red every time? Somehow there's more prosperity in those blue states where we live isn't there Puddy?

^ More arguing from emotion, and confusing correlation and causation.

Ask yourself why businesses are moving from our states, California, and Illinois to horrible poverty driven Texas and Florida? My industry is highly blue state centric but following that pattern. I just might.

Please, in the nicest of ways, anyone on this thread saying yea no partisan news/media should get funding should look at the fact that the current administration is 100% partisan but on the other end of the spectrum - and please GFYS. Not only is Trump doing anything you've remotely complained about to an extreme, but he is actively censoring (many ways including disallowing press at public events, insulting them, demeaning them) and extorting not just PBS but other educational institutions. I'd suggest if you support governments that do this, YOU are the un-americans and should fucking move to Russia or China where "Daddy is always right" (or Daddy makes you disappear)

When y'all are bitching that life in the coal mines sucks because of black lung, don't fucking come looking for pity or medical assistance or anything else, because that's the agenda you are supporting. Enjoy seeing other humans suffer while ya can, because Trump invariably turns on his own supporters and screws them. He's already well under way with cuts to federal jobs that employee people of all political views, military, and even VA spending, to screw our vets over even more.

Wow, this is high quality delusion. I'm not conservative but quite listening to PBS 15 years ago because of the blatant bias. It wasn't providing useful information. There is no longer any need to have government support the media. There has been an explosion of options and anyone can easily find an option they are happy with. Assuming that not funding what is now a pet project = the death of democracy is ridiculous. And no, Im not a trump fan.

Gov't should not FUND media. If progressives/Dems/liberals want PBS/NPR, pony up donations like those we see listed at the BEGINNING for these broadcasts showing their "support".

If people like PBS/NPR content, go commercial like the uber-vast majority of channels, streaming and Pods that didn't receive any gov't bootstrapping. YouTube was literally started in a garage. Sesame Street is a multi-Billion Dollar enterprise.

Giving PBS bootstrap funding back in the 1960s when the vast majority had the 3 Network channels made sense for some content diversity, and not "that" kind of diversity either.

Like Europe, it is time to stop media welfare from American Taxpayers. Hell, Bezos bought the WaPo years ago and and is just now learning biased media against the majority of America doesn't pay the bills. DUH!

Note: no one said CANCEAL PBS/NBR like CBS did to Colbert's money pit. Once something get gov't funding, taking to away is like taking food from a Polar Bear. Finally, real Common Sense is action.

Kimmel, Meyers and "The View" cows are getting their resumes cleaned-up. Even CBS is gearing up a Tim Allen/Richard Karn show next year to compete with Gutfeld! Reuters says it is false that this will be a $1B anti-woke thing, HOWEVER, the don't totally dismiss it. CBS will need something to fill that "Late Show" grave hole and Allen/Karn does sound interesting. Who knows what Paramount will do, it won't be Woke that's pretty sure.

And in 2028, just remember this was a Congressional Act, not an ExO, so it'll be harder to undo this defunding, and that is why the Dems are freaking out as one of THEIR cohorts losing THEIR FUNDING.

Both PBS and NPR are throwbacks to a time when media options and information dispersion were far more limited. With no lack of either now, there is no remaining justifiable reason to fund them with taxpayer money.
.
I say that as someone who still holds nostalgic memories of PBS. Back when I was a kid watching a big box TV with rabbit ears that captured 4 or 5 stations at most, PBS was the source of much kids programing (Sesame Street, Electric Company, Doctor Who).
.
But times move on. I don't think my own kids ever watched PBS or even know it exists. First cable TV and later the widespread adoption of high speed Internet have made both PBS and NPR anachronistic wastes of taxpayer resources.

If you want to donate to PBS be my guest. I'd rather spend my money getting my dick sucked. Cancer research? Smoking causes cancer, how much should a cancer researcher get paid to come up with that? Cuts to education? No, cuts to indoctrination. The Federal government shouldn't be funding education, that's done on a local level. President Trump is the greatest president America has EVER had. We don't want America to be like Minnesota.
