last commentRelax. They're going to cut us a tariff collecting check to cover this.
And let's be real, Jerome Powell just isn't doing his job right. He has questionable credentials and doesn't play ball with the administration. It's almost as if he treats his job as an independent entity within the government....who the fuck hired this guy?
I look forward to hearing from the RAGS (Reach Around Gang) about this.

P&G is a perfect example of the problematic oligopoloistic corporations in advanced market economies. These companies offer economies of scale and a minimal floor under product quality in order to maintain reputation with customers. But they have too much pricing power. They used Biden's talk of supply chain problems as a ruse to raise prices. It eventually became clear much of the price increases was going to profits, not to cover increased costs. Harris finally started talking about this after Sleepy Joe was put in his rocker out on the porch. But, coming so late, it just seemed like a gimmick. Tariffs will increase costs for goods produced and/or distributed in the US. But they may also be used as a smokescreen for increasing profit margins. Generally the gubment's "solution" to excessive pricing power has been windfall profit taxes. But, in cases where a lower price for something would not mean significantly less availability, we need a government intervention that will lead to price reductions.

And Ford's profits were wiped out by the tariffs

Have you been drinking ilb? P&G has ample competition in virtually every category it occupies. If one never wanted to give another red cent to P&G ever again, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from.
.
The reason that they are so successfully and have so much pricing power, despite having ample competition, is because many (but certainly not all) of their products work much better than those offered by competitors. But there is nothing stopping their competitors from getting better and competing on quality. There's also nothing stopping people from switching for price reasons.
.
That's the beauty of the capitalist system. People vote with their wallets, which means that P&G's pricing power is hardly unlimited. There is a certain ouch point that P&G cannot cross without motivating people to try other alternatives.

The OP provided just about the worst example of a company make his point. Tide laundry detergent was already priced significantly higher then budget and store brands yet holds a 30% market share of liquid detergent and an 80% share of the PODS market
It’s similar for Dawn dish soap. Again, its price point is much higher than other brands yet holds a whopping 55% of the market share.
I doubt s little tariff is going to make a significant reduction in brand loyalty for these products.

Again, taking single, isolated, outlier data points as some referendum on the overall economy.
Meanwhile, in the real world, my net worth just hit a new all-time high on the strength of the stock market alone and a couple smart moves. If you're fucking up this economy, that's on you!

@motorhead
Isn't the OP suggesting that the tariff on PG is being passed to the consumer? They don't seem to be suggesting anything about market share or price points relative to competition?
Ibb is definitely suggesting what you are saying.
I agree with your assessment btw......but the tariff(s) ARE increasing the price for consumers.

RAG doll one is here!
While I agree with you on your point, you can at least acknowledge that the tariffs are going to raise a variety of prices on consumer goods? It won't change our spending behavior or change our bottom lines.....but I know you've probably lived some segment of your life month to month right? Those folks might feel it.
I don't have a problem with some of the administrations policies, I just think the methods can be more refined and thought out.

jaynudd,
Yes - you are 100% correct. The OP was saying the tariffs will be passed to the consumer but I think his underlying assumption is that an increased cost will lead to decreasing sales. I just think most of the products P&G offers have such a brand loyalty that in the long run, at least I doubt it’s going to impact consumer choice

Just another excuse for a money grab. Ever hear of the clothing company Fabletics? I subscribe to them. In the spring they increased their monthly subscription service and blamed it on “tariffs” and when you place an order they put a “tariff surcharge” on every single item. IMO it’s a shameless money grab. I like their clothing so I keep subscribing because I feel they are better than the alternatives, just like consumers will keep buying Tide and Dawn (P&G) because they too (the masses) like them better than other options.

Typical Republican response by Puddy Tat. It's all about me me me me. There's no concept of fucking up millions of other people's lives. Hey who cares if elderly people have to sit on hold all day because Trump fired everybody that works with social security and people can't get their social security checks? Who cares about the 16 million people that will lose their health insurance? Our insurance will go up also because of this. Zero concern for anyone but yourself is typical.

Wait, you're the one who physically threatens people for disagreeing with them on the internet, trying to reinvent himself as some kind of humanitarian? This is rich, man.
I voted for Trump on the basis of what's best for America. You and the lib cope squad here have predicted Trump will end the world for the last 10 years and been wrong every time. You yourself said Trump would get less than 200 EVs because of abortion.
How can you not learn while being so chronically wrong?
Stop reading lib tabloid rags which just seem to rile you up without informing you.
