Trump fired the person who put out the statistics for the jobs report. It's hard to get accurate info if Trump fires everyone that puts out economic data that shows what a failure he is. People will be afraid to put out accurate data for fear of being fired. Trump once again just wants to lie and pretend that he's succeeding at things that he's clearly failing at.

last commentDustyj, there HAS to be more to it, this person (Dr. Erika McEntarfer) was appointed by Biden and manipulated data (per Trump on "Truth" social).
In the words of the great gumaman, if Trump says it was manipulated, then it is irrefutable.
I look forward to seeing the raw data and how it was manipulated, thus justifying the termination of Dr. McEntarfer.
RAGS, let me know what you find with your sources, as I only look at liberal, main stream media like a fucking idiot.

God only knows how the Fed will react to not getting objective economic data. Maybe they are legally bound to accept Federal Government numbers, or simply have no viable alternative. Ironically, if they accept goosed employment numbers from Trump, that will reduce the chances that they will cut the Fed Funds interest rate.

I'm going to pivot from the OP, and ask what do you think of the Federal Reserve as an institution? Where are you on the spectrum? If you feel it should be abolished, then the conversation is closed. But if you do find value in the Fed, do you think it's helpful for ANY administration....or in this case a President, to fire off this hard at what's supposed to be an independent institution? Or maybe you feel the fed is being partisan?
I'm fascinated by Trump attempting to get Powell to budge on interest rates through public verbal tirades on what he thinks should be done. Like he's an intellectual equal to Powell (in economic matters) on interest rates.

@jaybud999 - Abolished? I don't know the arguments well enough on that. The fed has been partisan for some time, and of course Trump is going to rant and rave at anyone who doesn't do things his way. I can't recall any president who didn't publicly clash with anyone who didn't goose the stock market on their behalf.
I want as interest rates as low as possible while keeping inflation under 2% and a conservative, low-deficit fiscal policy. We can't keep running up debt, and the only way to raise tax revenue is to grow (tax revenue to GDP is surprisingly constant).

It's early days. Trump spent the last six months trying to reign in government spending and the OBBBA just passed, so it hasn't yet replaced the government sugar high spending with organic growth. Give it time.

Repost at the end of Q1 2026 and we can discuss it then. In the meantime, a slight uptick in the unemployment rate by .1% is hardly the end of the world.

This is a Trump recession. There is literally zero chance of our economy improving with him in power. Zero. Prices will go up. Jobs will not be created, they'll be lost. People will lose medical insurance. Hospitals and nursing homes will close. The debt will significantly increase. Trump will keep pissing away huge amounts of tax dollars on himself. There will be natural disasters with no help in sight by this awful administration. The list goes on and on.

Now I understand how jackasses that govern states like CA and NY keep getting elected. They rely upon large numbers of fucking retards who are utterly ignorant of actual economic and fiscal concepts.
.
So when the aforementioned jackasses fuck their respective state budgets and economies with rhino dicks, resulting in: (1) some of the highest state unemployment rates in the nation; (2) the lowest level of home ownership in the country, (3) taxing the heck out of anything that moves (people, cars, etc.); and (4) otherwise endlessly abusing their own citizens with expensive mandates which drive up the cost of so many things (including energy and gasoline), we hear not a peep from them. La-la-la-di-da.
.
But then, when a minor .1% bump occurs in the national unemployment rate, which btw was already being predicted given recent government cost cutting efforts, the same fucking retards who are happy to elect people to firebomb their own states are suddenly making shrill predictions of doom. 😆
..
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but with a recent annualized GDP growth reading of 3%, a recession hardly looks imminent. Even less so with all of the natural economic stimulus which the OBBBA is going to provide. So I'm sorry to say that. if things aren't going well in your particular state, you only have yourselves to blame for being retarded enough to elect the state level jackasses you did. 😉

"Under Biden, after the economy matched its pre-COVID-19 employment levels in July 2022, the economy added 3.3 million jobs over the next 2 1/2 years. But 3.1 million of those jobs went to foreign-born workers. Native-born workers gained just 189,000 jobs over that same time period. But in just seven months of the Trump economy, native born workers have gained over 2 million jobs."
"Consumer sentiment is up, housing starts and permits are rising, even while sales of existing homes fall thanks to high interest rates, while both personal income and personal savings rates are rising. These numbers could be improved, especially the home sales numbers, if the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates, making it easier for everyone to afford a home."

National unemployment still quite low by historical standards. And of course this is all before the OBBBA impacts kick in, with much onshoring and cap ex spending expected.

Most folks vote on pocketbook issues, if the Democrats are a little smarter they’ll shut up and stop the left drift, move closer to the center, then wait for the tariffs to do their job. If the Republicans don’t make the cut by midterms, there will be a big shift in voting patterns. Meanwhile the lefties aren’t doing the democrats any favors.

@twentyfive - "if the Democrats are a little smarter they’ll shut up and stop the left drift, move closer to the center,"

===> "Most folks vote on pocketbook issues, if the Democrats are a little smarter they’ll shut up and stop the left drift, move closer to the center, then wait for the tariffs to do their job."
.
I agree with this on a national level. But the challenge that they have is the significant presence of an extreme left wing base in the party who cares far more about social and environmental issues than economic or fiscal issues.
.
Just look at CA. The Dems have fucked up the state economy and finances for many years, making everything much more expensive and difficult for its residents while continuously sporting the highest state unemployment rate for many years. Yet they keep getting elected and are rhino fucking the state to this very day. Indeed, as more moderates continue to flee the state in droves, the concentration of the extreme left wing bloc only becomes more pronounced. A similar phenomenon is happening in NY right now.
.
So right now the Dems are in a real pickle from the national election perspective. In order to pick up the votes they need in the Dem primaries from delegate rich states like CA, NY and IL, they need to sufficiently satisfy the progressive lunatics, especially now that those so-called "Superdelegates" are no longer allowed to vote on the first ballot. But in the process, a candidate may emerge who turns off the moderates and Independents in swing states.
.
It is also causing fallout in Congress. House Dems from these jurisdictions and even a couple of Dem Senators cannot just sit back and stay silent either because their voting blocs expect them to "resist." This is why the whack jobs AOC recently humiliated herself by pushing for an impeachment vote which went down in flames.
.
IMO the Dem party is quite fractured and in real trouble right now. IMO they're going to need one heck of a bad economic outcome to retake either chamber of Congress next year or to return the the Presidency in 2029.

^ Most of my friends are self employed business owners, or folks retired from that group, and no one I know is overly optimistic about Mr. Trumps economic plans. There appears to be a lot of short term gains that will create major long term problems going forward.
You can declare mission accomplished as loud and as often as you like, that doesn’t make it so.
This country needs both of our political parties to be in good shape for our system of governance to be successful. Without properly functioning institutions of government the checks and balances do not function effectively and we end up with an unstable, and dysfunctional economy that creates chaos for all.
@25: I'm no fan of the tariffs either. But I am a huge fan of the OBBBA, except that IMO the spending cuts were nowhere deep enough. Time will tell how all of this shakes out, including how much onshoring and the other manufacturing buildout actually executes. But I can at least see where he's headed and I like most of what I see.
.
But IMO he could be shooting his whole economic agenda in the foot with this immigration nonsense. Sure his goal in championing these manufacturing and energy production renaissances is to provide better jobs to many underemployed young Americans. But if it hits anywhere near where he hopes, we simply don't have anywhere near enough home grown kids able and willing to fill these jobs. We're going to need more immigrants too, but we just don't have a legal mechanism to get them in the numbers we may need.
.
As far as two functioning parties, I don't necessarily disagree. But the Dems have gone off the deep end in recent years. This includes not only the elected officials, but those who they appoint to various administrative agencies. The EPA, FTC, DOE, SEC, NLRB and an alphabet soup of other agencies were off the hook in their attempted power grabs, much of which would have had real impacts on our daily lives if not for a SC that put a stop to the worst of the abuses. In response, the Dems were even talking about packing the court with activist Justices. Net-net I just don't trust this party right now to exercise restraint and govern responsibly.
^ so you think this is a normal functioning Republican Party?
Sorry buddy they’ve abdicated all of their oversight responsibilities, this isn’t the best version for them either, governing responsibly isn’t in their vocabulary either.
What we have now is an absolute mess of constant chaos, and out of control corruption, it’s pretty close to anarchy.
^ I don't disagree that this isn't the best version of the Republican party. Tbh I wanted almost any Republican but Trump.
.
But the so-called "chaos" was actually orchestrated for effect and is dying down now that the OBBBA is passed and most of the trade deals are outlined. Also I wouldn't characterize anything as "anarchy." We can agree to disagree on this if necessary. And let's not go into corruption considering what has come out about Obama and the Russia hoax or the blatant corruption involving Biden and his son.
.
But one thing I do know is that the Republican party is not try impose a myriad of social and environmental policies upon me whether I like it or not, impacting everything from my ability to protect my school age girls to what I am allowed to drive or put in my home. They also aren't trying to tax the shit out of me.
.
So to me the choice was between is a raging narcissist who makes a lot of noise, but actually executes competent policy when it's all said and done, or a kindly seeming nice guy who could fuck up a ham sandwich and who tried to sneak endless ESG and other social mandates upon the population through regulatory agency back doors. I chose the former and I don't regret it.

I refuse to get sucked into that black hole with Obama, or Biden, or all of the endless bullshit that you guys use as talking points to gin up your base, lets talk about here and now, and explain why that raging narcissist that is POTUS, keeps trying to change the subject, no matter what the subject happens to be, and funny how many scandals this guy has gotten away with.
Right now the focus needs to be on this immigration fiasco, and on the chaos he keeps intentionally inflicting on the economy, with his tariff fiasco.

Even if the top gal who was fired didn’t manipulate the numbers, study after study had shown that the majority of career bureaucrats are liberal. Who’s to say the lower level number crunchers didn’t play footsy with the data. If they are recent Ivy League grads we most certainly know the answer.

^ there’s a new problem with this firing of the head of BLS, and it’s with SS, the head statistician is also responsible for the annual COLA benefit adjustment for seniors, this is going to be an “its about the economy stupid” moment that has the potential to give the Republicans a disadvantage going into the midterms.
^ @twentyfive: I'm guessing that there are plenty of others at BLS who can calculate the numbers. 😉 Government agencies don't generally forget how to do their jobs because a head is fired. Indeed most of those heads are swapped out at each change in administration anyway.
.
Now that's not to say that I liked the firing because I did not. But neither is it any great irreplaceable loss.
^ You aren’t even paying attention to what I said, sure lots of people can crunch numbers and make calculations, this isn’t about the numbers it’s about how this is perceived, this is about credibility, firing this woman is purely based on politics, she did nothing wrong and this will not be very well received especially if the COLA is adjusted downward, this is becoming a trend and my guess is Republicans are going to pay a price.
It’s pretty obvious Trump sees the midterms as a blood bath for him, else he wouldn’t have started this redistricting fight in Texas. You’ll see

.
Now I'm not going to claim any Nostradamus level gifts in predicting the future. But there was a lot of good stuff in the OBBBA which should provide a lot of economic stimulus. Will it sufficiently mitigate tariff impacts or kick in early enough to keep us ahead of a slowdown? Damned if I know, but neither does anyone else. I'll judge him based upon how all of this shakes out, but right now it's way too early to tell.
