Labor Market During/After COVID

shailynn
They never tell you what you need to know.
Out of curiosity, did anyone here leave their job for a new one in the past year? If you did not, why did you stay?

Just as covid started, I was offered full time work at a new company after contracting for several years. At the time it seemed like a gamble that came with some potential upside. When my old employer sacked all the contractors 6 months into the lockdown, I knew I'd made the right choice.

If I wanted a new job today, boy would now be the time to start looking.

I accepted a major promotion within my same company 2 weeks ago. I applied for a high level position thinking there’s no chance in hell I’d get it, but this is extraordinary times and I took my shot and got it. The labor market is turned upside down and now is the time to make a change

Every day HR is sending out emails announcing retirements & resignations. Older workers who may have been a few years away from retirement have grown weary of the supply chain bullshit and are calling it quits early. The position I filled was a VP who was only 59 but had enough.

Young people are chasing better opportunities and are bidding up the salary of entry level jobs.

I have looked at various job openings and while a few of them offer a better salary it has rarely been enough to offset the average monthly bonus I have been getting. None of them have offered anywhere near the 30 days of vacation time per year that I get at my current job let alone after you add in the 9 paid holidays we get now that the company added MLK Day, President's Day and Veteran's Day this year.

Add in the fact that I can work from home whenever I want and I have a completely flexible schedule as long as I work my 40 hrs per week between 8am and 11pm 7 days a week and it is hard to find someplace that allows for as much work/life balance as I have.

My current company also offers great benefits that cost a lot less than most other companies. Those factors plus the fact that I actually like my coworkers make it unlikely that I will leave anytime soon but I always keep an eye on the job market just in case I find an opportunity that I can't resist.

The one factor that had made me consider leaving was that our long time CEO retired at the end of 2019 and the Board of Directors hired the new CEO from outside the company right as the pandemic hit in March 2020. He replaced a lot of the senior leaders with his people and I was afraid of how the new leadership group would effect the company but so far it has been for the best.

Damn Whodey I could have written the same thing about my job. The only difference is the 2 people over me both left and only one has been replaced because they can’t find a suitable replacement, and it definitely will not me be. No thank you!

Job? I faintly remember having one of those. It cut into the time I could spend drinking and chasing strippers.

I didn't leave. Not very insightful, but I'm happy where I am for now. Reduced travel has reduced my overall hours. I spend more time actually working & getting things done, I'm more available to my team, peers, and execs. It basically looks like I'm over here killing myself for the company, when in reality I'm putting in less hours than ever. As others have said, resignations and retirements are coming on the regular. My intent is to wait for an attractive position to vacate and parlay my image into a payday within my company.

I've taken a few interviews elsewhere, just stay in practice.

^^ I dunno if I’d classify working at Pizza Hut as a “good” job, probably just an okay job.

I clearly made the wrong work decisions. Lawyer, but not practicing law, work in risk / compliance for one of the biggest investment banks in the world, but with inflation, pay has actually gone down (w/this employer) over the last few years because annual "raises" and bonuses get smaller despite record-breaking profits every year. Finding something new has been a monumental pain in the ass...unless I want to move to the east coast (no thanks). Promotions here are unheard of; if you get the job for a posting at a higher level, they re-post it at your current level, make you apply again, and then transfer you to the new role at that same level. It's shady as hell. Thought I had something lined up a couple months ago that would have been life-changing money, but they went with somebody else. (I'm sorry, single moms of Phoenix!). In the meantime, I suppose at least I still get to watch Good Morning Football while I work every morning. Kay Adams....number 1 draft pick!

WTF? All the Pizza I can eat for me an my friends? What's not to love? How do you think I keep strippers at my table with stripper magnets like Leisure Suit Larry and SJG everywhere?

Commercial moves, property moves, everything was screwed up because of our COVID precautions, now it is further hampered because of the economic collapse.

^^^ have you ever held a job other than the one at Blockbuster for 2 weeks before they fired you for masturbating in the new release section because you took the work “release” too literally?

Was talking to my brother earlier today and he was telling me asked for a $25K raise and got it - he's been w/ the company for about 20-years and is considered pretty-essential
