Supposedly, dogs trained to sniff drugs and disease can also detect Covid-19 with near 100% accuracy. I don't know what stage of the disease the dogs were smelling, but my understanding is that viral shedding is actually the highest right before symptoms appear up to the next 5-7 days of symptoms, so it theoretically should catch presymptomatic and even asymptomatic people.
The only problem is that there is a limited number of dogs trained to sniff in general, which takes about 6-8 months to two years (similar to best case vaccine time ranges). If you reassigned all the available detection dogs for Covid-19, it would still take around 6-8 weeks to get them trained. And then you have a lot of people that are either afraid of dogs or allergic to them as they have to get their nose all up in your armpits.
