Am I right in thinking the last two that were impeached didn't win a second term?

@londonguy Clinton's Impeachment and acquittal happened during his second term, Nixon won a second term and resigned before it expired never faced Impeachment, Johnson was acquitted during his trial and never ran for a second term

Depends on the competition. If Bernie gets the Dem nomination, Trump will win in a landslide. If Biden or Bloomberg get it, then the election will be close. I actually think Trump wins either way. But November is a long time away.

Clinton=impeached during 2nd term, so couldn’t have been elected to 3rd term anyway Nixon=resigned prior to impeachment Andrew Johnson=interesting case. Entirely political impeachment. He was a Democrate who was elected as VP to Lincoln on a National Unity platform. After Lincoln’s assassination, Johnson opposed many of the Republican plans on reconstruction. Republicans wanted strong guarantees for black civil rights, while Johnson, a lifelong Democrat, opposed federal civil rights guarantees. Johnson was impeached, not convicted, and failed to get the DEMOCRATIC nomination in 1868. So there’s really no track record for a President who was elected (not succeeded following a Presidential death) being impeached in his 1st term, and the impact of the impeachment on re-election.

^ Chimera is right on point. To add, if Clinton had been running for another term, he very likely would have won. A majority of the population, most notably including Independents, did not want it. Support is a little higher this time around on a national level given the more polarized nature of the country, but opposition to impeachment and removal is still much higher in the battleground states. Like the Republicans before them, the Dems are going to pay for using impeachment as a political weapon.

Anyone think impeachment will remain a political tool instead of it's original intent?

Clubber absolutely, dems want that and it will just make politics uglier from here on out.

Yes, @Clubber, the whole intent of the impeachment process was to overturn the election. Thanks for pointing that out. Public opinion polls have hardly budged during the whole process, start to finish. I don't think the impeachment process will matter either way. However it fires-up Trump's base. Just saw pickup truck at the gym with laser-printed message accusing Schiff, Pelosi of treason. Lol. Only a few states that are really in contention: Arizona, Pennsylvania, Ohio. If Trump wins PA, it's probably over for the Dems.

===> "Anyone think impeachment will remain a political tool instead of it's original intent?" If history is any teacher, absolutely. All 3 of the impeachments that have occurred were politically motivated. The Founding Fathers made the bar high with "high crimes and misdemeanors" precisely to limit the use of impeachment in this way. But they also know that some politicians would not be able to resist the temptation, which is why they also made it so hard to convict. It is amazing how prophetic the Founding Fathers really were in drafting this Constitution, not just with impeachment shenanigans but in so many other areas as well.

Just to build up your confidence Alan Dershowitz has joined Trumps Legal team, why does that inspire confidence ? Take a peek at the roster of Dershowitz celebrity clients, not an innocent client on the roster, but they all get off, I'm gonna go out on a limb and call Dershowitz the finest justice money can buy. You just know Trump is gonna get off, guilty or not LOL 😊

Randumb, you're easily impressed. You know how many law professors there are in this country who have taught at least one course, throughout the years, in constitutional law? I'm sure it wasn't terribly difficult to find 500 liberal leaning ones through some online survey to put their electronic signature on a form letter. The very fact that any organization felt the need to go through this exercise should tell you how insecure they feel about this.

@rickdugan— Johnson’s impeachment—political with a fig leaf of a law Congress passed preventing Johnson from firing Lincoln’s Cabinet officers Clinton’s impeachment—political, but Clinton did end up losing his Law license over the perjury charge he was impeached on Trump’s impeachment—highly political. Many Democratic politicians have referenced impeaching him even before he took office. The “Obstruction of Congress” charge is particularly weak since every President being investigated by Congress appeals subpoenas to Federal Court.

Dugan - The list of law professors contains scholars from top law schools like Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley. For example Laurence Tribe who had students like John Roberts. But seeing as you're someone who's spent his entire adult life perfecting the art of paying hookers for sex, I should value your opinion on constitutional law.

Impeachment was originally designed as a political tool or else it would be tried by the Judiciary, like other legal matters and not in the Senate, like other political matters. Impeachment is and never has been about the law. You're an idiot SJG since the greatest danger to democracy is the left. You're the assholes encouraging foreigners to flock here and buying their votes. Wah, wah ,Random, there are more than 500 law professors within 75 miles of me, so why would anyone care about 500 hand picked liberals? As long as democratic socialists exist America is doomed. AOC and Greta Thuberg and I am supposed to think of the left as not retarded?

Dershowitz is about protecting civil liberties, and so this means getting a criminal suspect off. But an impeachment is not a criminal trial. Trump does not have any right to be not convicted. The rights of our populace outweigh his. ^ Dershowitz isn't about protecting shit, he caters to well off guilty defendants, and is as skilled at minipulating courtrooms as Trump is at manipulating media. Dershowitz is all about the money don't ever forget that.

I am looking forward to Novermber's 3 way spit of Republican Votes: 1. 1/3 to some sensible Republican 2. 1/3 to Trump. 3. 1/3 to Michael Bloomberg. I mean its not like at critical times our nation has not been shaped by such. Teddy Roosevelt running to unseat William Howard Taft so that Woodrow Wilson could win and give us an anti-colonial position and the League of Nations. And don't forget about 1860, when Southerners walked out of the Democratic Convention because they couldn't get their "Slave Code for the West" into the platform. SJG

No Republican votes for Michael Bloomberg, who does prove that Democrats are the party of the rich and they all lie. Dershowitz is all about the money? He'sa Democrat so why is this surprising. Grubby, New York Democrats would sell their own children.

Randumb, you do realize that that the political philosophies of law professors, just like judges, influence their interpretation of the Constitution, no? They probably got the email list straight from the American Constitution Society, which is the left leaning think tank to which many of these types belong. They no doubt would have received very different answers if they sent that same question to the Federalist Society mailing list. Here's an idea goober. Next time use some critical thinking before taking a spoon fed puff piece like that and posting it like you just discovered fire. Just a thought. 😉

^^ As I said before I've been following Harvard Law Prof Laurence Tribe on the question of whether Trump's actions are impeachable. He has many famous students like chief justice Roberts and Schiff who's proven to be a remarkable lawyer. Can you name anyone of similar stature? Please don't name that buffoon Dershowitz. The study I quoted is from a non-profit, but definitely anti-Trump.

^ It's amazing how the man who is arguably the nations preeminent scholar of Constitutional law is suddenly a "buffoon" because you do not like his analysis. ;)

^^ I'm sure you know that Dershowitz insisted that Clinton's behavior was impeachable even though Clinton didn't commit any actual crimes. So what made him change his mind 22 years later? Money? Fame? Or is Dershowitz just an aging buffoon. I'm not a constitutional lawyer and either are you. I'm absolutely convinced that Trump used taxpayer money to bribe a foreign government into digging up dirt on his rival. Clinton lied about having a consensual affair with an intern (which is more benign than anything you or I have done). There's no rhyme or reason to Dershowitz's attitude.

@RandomMember Clinton vs Jones was resolved in Paula Jones favor and President Clinton was cited for contempt of court for this intentionally false testimony. Also known as lying under oath aka perjury..... an actual crime. And I know, it was about sex in a sexual harassment lawsuit, but the oath of testimony does not have an exclusionary clause about sex. The 5th Amendment precluds self incrimination, but if you testify under oath, it needs to be true.
  • Hank Moody

Yes, perjury is a crime. We’re on a tangent from Random’s point though, which is still true: Dershowitz argued about the Clinton impeachment that no crime was necessary for a president to be impeached. He now has conveniently changed his mind. There’s plenty of tape of both sides of the aisle changing their minds on whether a crime was necessary, whether witnesses should be called etc. Lindsey Graham, Jerry Nadler and many others., including and especially, Dershowitz.
