The word “globalism” is bandied about carelessly every day by people who have only the vaguest idea what that word really means.
“Globalism” is not a terribly easy concept to encapsulate but I’ll take a swing at it.
I was on an airplane flying between Dubai and Houston on an Air Emirates flight. While I was enjoying a meal in the first class cabin the oddity of my situation suddenly came into sharp focus.
There I was, at 37,000 feet ...
... a spic from Texas ...
... riding on an Arab airline ...
... on a nonstop flight from Dubai to Houston ...
... where I had completed negotiations on a complex joint venture involving companies from the U.S.A., Germany, Japan and the U.K. ...
... flying high above the mountains of Turkey...
... wearing an expensive Swiss watch made mostly of gold from South Africa ...
... washing down some excellent boeuf bourguignon with a classic red burgundy ...
... and looking forward to ...
1. ... pulling my German automobile into my garage in the back of my huge Texas home that had been painstakingly built for me primarily by construction workers from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras ...
2. ... and seeing my lovely Indonesian wife whom I had not canoodled for nearly three weeks ...
3. ... and squeezing my Indo-Spic kids whom I had not seen in almost three weeks (except during our daily FaceTime chats accomplished via our American branded iPads made in Taiwan)
... and last but not least ...
4. ... revisiting my favorite high mileage strip clubs to see what exotic new desploogination service professionals had been imported from faraway lands to entertain me in the VIP rooms.
Whatever the socio-political-economic wonks in the ivory tower might tell you, my circumstances at that moment described what globalism meant in my life.
