“An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy”
an study authored by Swedish Nobel-laureate economist Gunnar Myrdal is used by PBS documentary “American Denial” to examine racism in America.

Why so many Americans still deny racism exists when the evidence is everywhere?

The documentary shows the pattern of racial oppression that we have actively recreated throughout history to the present moment -- while just as actively denying its experience and consequences .

Racism exists but that doesn’t mean that all whites are racist. Also, systemic racism existed many decades ago but that doesn’t mean that it exists today. Finally, because racism exists doesn’t mean that it is impossible for people of color to succeed.

Racism is so pervasive in America that it often goes unnoticed.

I never considered myself racist. I am opposed to racism and have been ever since I was old enough to have an opinion on the issue.

A black comedian I saw on TV convinced me by his clever monologue that I held racist attitudes. He described driving down the street in a fashionable, prosperous neighborhood and noticing a young WASP male driving a sporty new BMW convertible. He assumed the young man had earned an M.B.A. Later he noticed a young black dude driving a similar convertible and assumed the guy was a drug dealer.

The joke was funny because of how it was delivered and because it rang true. But it also forced me to recognize my own latent racism.

There is an upside. You can’t work on a problem unless you first recognize that it exists.

I saw the same stand up act. The punchline was that the first guy did have an MBA and the second was a drug dealer.

What do you do, besides laugh, when people cry racism? Well if I am drinking milk I snort it out of my nose. Example of a racist hate group? Southern Poverty law Center.

Skibum, the argument that one can be bigoted against bigots is inane. You're calling a group that opposes the KKK and other hate groups a "hate group".... Would your clients and colleagues approve of your neo nazi tendencies? You should advertise yourself as a "pro white" attorney. Maybe do some pro bono work for skineads accused of hate crimes, that'll be something you can proudly brag about.

Racism is institutional and systemic. White America's normativeness is such an obvious omnipresent example, and yet whites can use their privilege to not even be aware of it...

Most of our politics is driven by racism, that and the closely related social darwinism, and Christian nationalism.
