I had a visit to my local friendly urologist today. (Past BPH problem. All fixed now.) He told me that Viagra goes off patent later this year and that a generic version would be available. In fact, he said, some pharmacies are selling it now. It will still be prescription only, but at a price much reduced from the current price, perhaps as little as 10% of current price.
I got a prescription and will soon find out if this is all true. I'll have to drive 40 miles to the participating pharmacy, but, hey, that's $5 a pill vs. $50 a pill. I think that would be worth the drive.
I wouldn't depend on that guy for info about low priced ED drugs. Canadian and Mexican generic drugs abound. I pay 75 cents per pill for 100mg generic Viagra. PM me and I'll send the link.
My experience with mail order from India and Mexico is that I suspect the dosage is diminished. I have to take 200 mg to equal 100 mg of prescription medication.
Legal generic Viagra is supposed to be available in December of this year under an agreement with Pfizer. I have forgotten the name of the company but they will be paying Pfizer a royalty for the use. I don't expect this royalty to be cheap. So I don't think that there will be a huge decrease in price. But I hope that there is enough that more insurance companies and especially Medicare will start covering it. Otherwise I'll continue to order from India even though I do agree with gawker.
If Viagra is still on patent then not a single one of you is buying generic viagra. If it is made overseas its more likely closer to a placebo. If you have decent medical insurance its $1 a dose.
Have bought the outrageously price Pfizer product in the past and compared it multiple times to the Indian manufactured Cipla product that I now purchase. I did this comparison on consecutive uses. NO difference for me. If fact, I felt the ~ $0.94 / 100 mg Cipla product worked better.
Here is some info from GoodRx (where I compare other prescription prices) that agrees because of Teva's exclusive agreement the price may not come down all that much:
BTW: One other option if your doctor is willing (mine was) is to have him write you a script for Sildenafil and get it filled at a legal US mail order pharmacy for a hell of a lot less than Pfizer Viagra but, still not as cheap as Cipla product bought internationally. I use Health Warehouse in Kentucky.
@suckstar: I thought you were only in your 40s. Seems a little young to be taking Viagra. Unless, like a true rockstar, you've had some problems with other drugs over your life.
I've had access to Mexican pharmacies for years an'd never paid more than 80 cents per 100 mg pill. Tried branded Viagra as well, exactly the same effect on me.
I paid about $1.50 per 100 mg from India and it works exactly the same as Pfizer brand for me. I could have paid less but got a small quantity first to try it out. But I should have waited, I was in Mexico recently and it's cheaper and easy to get there.
I buy generic viagra at Walmart with a doctor script. It is for Revatio 20 mg (aka sildenafil). It isn't labeled for ED, only for pulmonary arterial hypertension, but it is the same chemical, just a slightly smaller dose. It is $3 a pill at Walmart cash for me. My ins doesnt cover ED.
20 mg is pretty low. I usually want 25 or 50, so I buy 50 and split them if needed. One time I bought 100 mg but splitting them in to four equal parts is nearly impossible. $10 for 100 mg is ridiculously expensive.
