I'm not sure this (or 9/11) would factor into a decision regarding a move to Manhattan. It is still very safe for a large city in the US. There are plenty of smaller places where you're likelihood of being caught in a crime is statistically higher.
I'd be much more concerned about commute times and good housing.
Manhattan is loaded with cops. Especially when there are important visitors. One of the safest cities in the world to live in.
