My own experience is that you can't fight them directly. But you also must not ever submit to them. If you do submit in order to placate them, then it will never stop and they will destroy you and never respect you.
They live to enforce societal norms. And if you are already delegitimated, then they will chew you up and spit you out. The best way to deal with them is to have comrades, so you are not alone. Either they treat you and your group with respect, or they are replaced.
