I'm in the midwest, but it was appropriate in its context. Are you afraid of a word?

He said the n word. He didn't use the n word. The context is pretty clear here and his bigger message is pretty clear, too. If you read lot listen to the whole comment, there's no doubting that he sees we still have a long way to go with racial issues in this country.
