Seriously. Thy titty bar vs gentlemens club thread got me wondering since the lack of a VIP area was considered a defining characteristic of a titty bar.
Around here, we have a few types of dances. Table: Done where ever you happen to be - at your table, bar stool, or by the wall, whatever. They usually offer the same level of nudity as on stage and limited contact. They usually cost $5-15 per song with most right in the middle. Lap: Done in designated area, which is usually semi private. Contact varies a bit, but its universally higher than the table dance option. They typically cost $20-$25 per song. Rooms: These are done in private rooms that are generally in a separate area with some sort of curtain at least. Size, level of privacy and appointments in the room vary. Nudity and mileage vary significantly from club to club and dancer to dancer. The room fee is typically in 15-30-60 minute blocks paid up front to the club with the customer negotiating and paying the dancer directly. Not all clubs offer all, and some clubs put their own spin on it (3 for 100 rooms or 15 minute lap dances) but those are the basics.
Notice none of that is VIP - VIP is typically a completely separate concept that's more about where you sit. For example one piece of truth in that BS review joker pointed out was that there are segregated sections of Monroe that are off the main floor. These are considered "VIP" areas, you gain admittance by buying something (a bottle, a VIP card, etc), renting it or by being a celebrity of some sort. Tootsies has a similar setup, there's the main floor downstairs and then there is a slightly raised floor with nicer chairs, a dedicated bar, higher waitress to customer ratio, etc. Then they've got the upstairs section with love seats, its own bar, more waitresses, etc. You pay a smallish entry fee to get in the door, then you can pay progressively more to gain access to the VIP areas. Dances don't really happen in those area's, girls tend to be more frisky at your chair since customers in those areas are proven to be spenders and they have a greater level of privacy already.
I always see people talking about "taking a girl to VIP" can someone translate it for me? Does that typically mean what I'm calling a lap dance? Or a room? Or is VIP different in other parts of the country (or I guess Canada too - sorry Art)?

For the upscale Detroit clubs I frequent, VIP means private booths in a separate area, usually upstairs. Table dances and lap dances at your table do not exist. Lap dances, nude dances or whatever take place in the private booths. In some clubs you have to pay to go into the VIP area; in others you just tip the bouncer ($5 to $20). Once you're in the VIP booth, the price for dances or "dances" depends on what you want and what the dancer agrees to.
