NHS prescriptions of sex drug increase to 2.4 million in 2012

Viagra use is on the up, with the number of men prescribed the drug ­hitting a record high.

Nearly 2.4 million prescriptions were handed out last year to help men perform in the bedroom – up from 1.8 million in 2007.

Shadow Public Health Minister Diane Abbott said: “These figures show the pressure that many men, and also our NHS, are under.

“And there's a growing culture of young men getting it off the internet.”

The rise is being put down to the fact more men need help because of diabetes and high blood pressure.

But Ms Abbott added: “It could be performance anxiety due to financial pressures or our pornified culture making normal sex seem boring.”
